I'm looking to do a couple of externships at a few pediatric programs before applying next summer. Any advice on how to approach dental faculty about this? If I can only spare 1-2 days is it even rude to ask to come visit their program?

I think some time spent is better than no time. Just make the time count. Remember that you are getting info about the program but they are also going to be judging you. Some people do externships and then don't get interview invitations. That's because the externship was an informal interview and they didn't do very well.
