Hey guys-

I'm finishing up an anesthesiology residency.

A friend of mine is thinking of sending his daughter to med school. What's a 'good' score to get nowadays to atleast get considered at US allopathic schools?

Back 4 years ago...well I guess it was really 8 years ago (when I started med school)...it was 30. 30 was sort of the magic number. Is that still the case?

Thanks.

30 still seems to be the number everyone always lists, but it seems to have gone up a little since the introduction of the computerized test. Assuming no massive deficiencies and a balanced, A 30 should at least earn you a look at your application, mid 30's (32-35ish) will make you competitive at most schools, and above that you should be very competitive everywhere. There are some schools that are starting to get some freakishly-high median scores (WashU and Duke come to mind) in the mid-upper 30s, but they're the exception rather than the norm. A score below an 8 in any section will hurt you.

Yep, from as far as I can tell, 30-32 is generally what a good score is. Surprising that it hasn't changed much. Or maybe not surprising haha.

Well, it's normalized over a recent time period, so a 30 is still roughly the same percentile than it was 10 years ago.

Yes, but accepted medians are going up every year.

30 still seems to be the door man in sort of a way, but most school medians are approaching 32 if not beyond.

A good score is above 30. As for minimum, some schools screen out applicants who score below 8 in one of the sections.
