I am a D1 and I... have no idea, to be honest. There seems to be no pressure to specialize, even if you get the grades. But the opportunity is there. There are definitely leadership opportunities through ASDA & plenty of other student groups. Like you said, the research opportunities are there. The administration is trying to make the curriculum more clinical, which I think is a positive. I know people specialize in peds, endo, perio, and the U has a post grad TMD/orofacial pain certification program, but I have no idea how common it is to do OMFS or ortho.
