Hello,

I am trying to decide between Buffalo and UMN. It's very likely that I get to pay in-state at MN and I can switch to in-state at Buffalo after D1. Therefore, the cost of the 2 schools are the same, about $300k. The weather is not very different between the 2 places, lots of snow and cold. Now the programs offered by the 2 schools would be the biggest factor for me to choose. I will probably want to specialize so I need to take this into consideration too.

Thank you very much in advance.

If you get IS for MN you should go there. If not Buffalo all the way. I do not know how much UNLV is but I do know you also get IS after 1 year.
Upenn will break your bank.

Honestly if its only a 50% chance, I would just go with Buffalo/UNLV whichever you like more. Unless you get Deans at Upenn it will cost a ton.

From buffalos 2016-2017:

102+71+70+66= 309. Depending on how you live, you could drop it to 270k living like a homeless person. HOWEVER this is not counting in the 3-4% tuition hike everywhere. Count that in and its probably closer to 280-290K with livable conditions(This is absolutely stretching it of course).

235k is definitely not possible unless you live on the streets. It gets a ton of snow there so thats not the best idea.

Hello,

I am trying to decide between Buffalo and UMN. I also have 2 more interviews at UNLV and UPenn and I’m debating whether I should attend those, so I would appreciate some advice too. I’m currently an international student but I’m hoping to obtain my US permanent residency in Sep 2017. It's funny that in another thread here someone else is asking about in-state UMN vs out-of-state Iowa. Let's put it this way, if I'm in-state for UMN I would choose this school in a heartbeat since I have family here. Unfortunately, I'm not (yet) a MN resident so here it goes.
  1. Cost: I think for Buffalo it’ll be $280k assuming that I get in-state after D1 and Minnesota would be $430k if I remain OOS, but I’m in the process of petitioning to become a MN resident. If I am granted in-state status at MN (it’s a 50% chance), it’ll be $320k, so still $40k more expensive than Buffalo. I think rent would also be cheaper at Buffalo compared to MN.

  2. Life: I currently live in Minneapolis and really like this city. Can someone give me some input regarding Buffalo, especially safety (my biggest concern)? And the weather is not very different between the 2 places, I’m assuming?

  3. The schools themselves: I could not figure out much from my interview day, so some input would be appreciated.
Also, should I attend my UNLV and UPenn interviews? I think the cost of attendance for UNLV would be comparable to Buffalo, correct? And UPenn has been my dream school since I was a high school student applying to their undergrad.

Thank you very much in advance.

It's gonna be incredibly difficult if not impossible to get in-state at MN.

Buffalo is 250k for a NY resident, considering you are OOS, its closer to 270K. Where did you get 235 k from?
Thank you. You're right, I did say in my original post that $235k is before room and board, but I edited to reflect room and board too because I guess that's more relevant.

She went to undergrad in MN for quite awhile so I dont think its impossible considering her whole family lives there. If she establishes a permanent residency it would have to be MN.

I think if she had applied while initially applying for undergraduate she would have been granted it easily as she could have been determined to be dependent on the parents/guardians in Minnesota but now as she has graduated and entering dental school/professional school she is no longer considered as dependent and would have needed to be here for 1 year on non-educational purposes. So yes if a gap year was taken.

Man some states are just nuts on the residency stuff. In NY you can establish residency just by being in school for a year.

I'm from the city and grown quite fond of Buffalo. Nice change of pace, quieter and nicer people that take their time with things. No hair pulling traffic. Very affordable living. Last winter we only had two days of snow fall, only one being significant(maybe 8 inches?). If anything, NYC and Penn had more snow fall and colder days than Buffalo last year, I rarely even took out my heavy duty coat.I didn't dig out my car last winter. Haven't done it this winter yet either. No sub zero temperatures either, yet alone below 20 so far this winter. Summers are beautiful here, especially fall and spring too. City really comes alive.

Cost of living is really low here. Area is nice near campus, especially north of it. One thing I wish I did was a buy a condo during my first year, they;re still around 60-70k. So thats something you can definitely think about in regards to UB. South of campus is a bit sketchy too.

I pay $840 for rent, 1 bed room., but includes parking space, utilities (except for internet/cable)

-35$ for internet
-30 for cricket plan
-10 for netflix
-10/15 $ for gym membership
-$1o0 or so for car insurance
-200-300 in food
-200 play money

Some of my class mates pay 400-600 in rent. maybe in cheaper too if they have roommates. I'm definitely on the high end

I've enjoyed my professors, a real passionate group of faculty members. No complaints besides one of two and with those, its mainly with the teaching style. The pre-clinics are old, but your class will experience a brand new preclinical, and new chairs in the clinic. They're building it right at this very moment. Very exciting time and bring a lot of value to the school.

UB is changing and constantly listening to feedback from its classes. We had some changes done for the class before us put into effect immediately. Nice small class size, not as big as Temple.

Update: Looks like it's very likely for me to be approved as a MN resident and pay in-state tuition! So the cost of UMN (in-state) and Buffalo (in-state after D1) will be about the same for me (~$300k). Now it all comes down to the programs offered by the 2 schools. I will probably want to specialize so that's a big factor for me too. Please give me some advice about this. Thank you!

Buffalo Senior Here...you have an equal chance of specializing at both schools...If your family is in Minnesota, I would go there in a heart beat and not think twice - If you can legitimately establish in-state status. GL
