Hey all,

One of the schools I applied to was Minnesota. I haven't heard anything from them regarding interviews... Just wanted to start a Minnesota thread b/c I haven't heard many people on here talking about it? Anyone else apply to Minnesota?

I hear we are supposed to know about interviews in January....

My minnesota rejection was mailed last year.

My MN interview invite last year came via regular mail (pretty sure it was a regular, business-sized envelope, too, so don't freak out!), around this time of year (beginning/mid Jan). So, if they're following the same time-frame as last year, you guys should hear soon. Post-interview acceptances were mailed (big envelope this time) early/mid-March.

I applied to Minnesota too! Hopefully we will all hear something next week!

What is Minnesota known for in particular? What strengths, signature programs or specialties? (There were some earlier threads on this topic, but they weren't too detailed.)

I'm a Minnesota resident, and after four years at the twin cities U, I think we're best known for our brand new equine center, our Raptor Center which takes birds from all over the world, research and our self sustaining, on-campus farm.

We are also one of the first universities to really push the behavioral interviews for applicants.

Ps.

If that's not enough to impress you, we have the greatest baseball team in the world (after all the ridiculous trades, our oldest veteran is going to be Justin Morneau!) and a bridge made out of a giant spoon and a cherry.

A year off isn't so bad really. In retrospect, I wish I had taken a year off between high school and college, I would have appreciated college more. I am certainly going to enjoy vet school (if I am so lucky to get in) after having worked for the last 10 years, ha ha ha.

I am waiting for my OOS letter from MN too. I am assuming I'm a no (my GPA was barely 3.4 though my GREs were great) but it will be nice to know either way.

Not to hijack, but any idea when Wisconsin sends out it's info? I am taking Statistics just for them, and I can get my money back if they would tell me either way soon, hee hee!

Yeah, I'm excited to have the opportunity to get my feet wet in other areas of animal medicine I may have never had the chance to explore if I had gotten in. Plus, a year without course work sounds lovely right now. I'm already looking forward to the future, I made the Dean's list this last semester and will have a 3.67 (last 45) going into next year's application process, so there's really nothing to be bummed out about.

I also want to extend a helping hand to anyone that does get accepted. If you need information about our dear twin cities including housing or campus questions, I can certainly try my best. Minneapolis/Saint Paul are incredible cities. Saint Paul is quiet and full of old, retired liberals who all seem to own american pit bull terriers (my favorite!) and Minneapolis is crazy and full of great beer. You can also bike anywhere, for any of you fellow cyclists. Good luck!

I ride a fixed 1971 Peugeot, it's a little too big for me and I'm still a sissy and left the front brake on, but I'm building up a new one this spring.

I was a bit surprised more people haven't applied to Minnesota. Our winters aren't even real winters anymore, so now all you have to brave are our ridiculous summers, but it's worth it. I wouldn't get just any old state tattooed on my foot, that's for sure!

I "heart" brakes.

I am way too much of a chicken for a fixie. I have a Fuji mtn bike I hardly ride and a Fuji Team Issue road bike that is really nice. I used to ride for a local team and they gave them to me for free, so I get to say I was "semi" pro once, but I really got on the team because my boyfriend at the time was friends with the bike shop owner. That boyfriend is long gone but thankfully my true loves remain in the garage, ha ha.

And you're right, once we coasters get the concept of layering, the winters in the frozen midwest aren't that bad. And I miss having my nostril hairs freeze when I go outside, ok that was a lie.

When I first started to apply, I thought my credentials were pretty good. Since joining this site, I have found that I am sorely lacking and have shot too high on most of my schools. It has been discouraging, but hopefully I will have better luck next year.

VeganChick--Also remember that we haven't heard from our in-state school, yet. Our chances really are best there, so don't get too down just yet! Hope is still alive!

Well, you're certainly in good company VeganChick.

I also have to say that I saw your comment about your rejected breeding cat and felt some what of a connection. My 11 year old cat Talulah Bell was going to be a convenience euthanasia at the hospital where I worked because she was acting territorial around some new kittens. (I seriously don't blame her, that freakin' cat is a princess and will not stand for less hahaha).

Apparently she was a designer breed mix of birman and ragdoll so she's the most beautiful thing, I just couldn't let her die, so I scooped her up, told the vet it wasn't happening and called my boyfriend to say "we have a cat now, deal with it ".

That was two years ago, and my boyfriend and I have decided to never get another cat because we know we will just be fooling ourselves to think we'd find one as good as our little reject.

Moral of the story: Rejects that get second chances...succeed!

Sorry about the rejections, I agree it's best to either hope for other schools, or look at the time as a chance to build up your experience.

I had a dream last night where I was counting up all my interview invites, but then forgot to call them and tell them I was coming. The pressure is getting to me!

Oh, and remember last year, VA-MD sent email interview invites this very Friday, if you weren't checking your email compulsively enough.

Mickeyspet, when you said that you didn't do well enough on the non academic aspect--did MN give you feedback on your app in the rejection letter, or are you basing that on the averages?

Thanks for all of the kind words, everyone! The letter I received didn't mention why they didn't like my non-academic portion, other than it wasn't competitive enough. I would liked to have seen some hard numbers/averages in terms of vet/animal/research hours. My LA experience is really lacking, and I had about 100 research hours and over 2000 SA hours working as a tech assistant.

It does give me some hope, though, since I made it through the academic portion. I have a sub-3.0 gpa (cumulative), so I concentrated on applying to schools that primarily look at last 45 hrs. and pre-req gpa. Maybe it gives some hope to those who have a less-than-stellar gpa or are battling an old low gpa (I had a previous B.A. from 15 years ago that's still coming back to haunt me).

I have an interview with Ross coming up...I don't want to say it's a 'backup', but I'm over 35 and not sure if I can wait another year to reapply. Again, thanks guys, and good luck to everyone!!!

Mickeyspet, I am also over 35 (37 to be exact) and if I have another year to apply, you have another to apply! Don't despair!

However, one of the vets at my practice who is a Ross alum said they she did really appreciate that the vets were there to teach without any other distractions, and she felt good about her experience there.

Great, now I will be (even more) email obsessed today with the VA-MD thing!

Nah, I am going to give them until Monday's mail. I remember it would take a long time for mail to get from WI back to VA when I lived there, and I still haven't gotten my IL invite letter sent 1/8. Besides, I suspect I got a reject letter based on what we've heard about the standards in the recent letters, and I don't need to hear that on the phone AND in writing, ha ha. It is not like they are going to take away your invite though if you want to call.

I thought I heard that they were calling this year. Probably next week. That's what someone else on here said, and I called VA-MD to make sure they had my current daytime phone number (it changed). And I asked Joyce if that was something they needed and she chuckled and said they very well might. So I took that to mean they will be calling for something (interviews, I hope...a rejection over the phone would just be too mean). Not to say I won't be obsessively checking my email anyhow!

Got my rejection letter today. Mine said that I didn't meet the academic standards. Which I don't understand if MickeysPet's <3.0 did (sorry MickeysPet, just playing devil's advocate for a second)

Oh well. This whole vet school application thing is a crap shoot.

One thing to note, was the letter said there were 1,153 applications for only 90 seats. And I'm OOS, so the numbers were against me regardless.

That's why I asked Mickey if they wouldn't mind listing their stats. I thought I'd have a little advantage since I was an in-stater even though my grades weren't anything to brag about, but they were above a 3.0.

It has to be frustrating to meet the academic portion but not the non-academic requirements, that seems a little bizarre.

What I found odd was that I exceeded the average GPAs/GRE scored listed. And there was no mention of my non-academic qualifications. Only academic. And still no interview.

Last year when I got my rejection letter from minnesota I was also told my academics were competetive but my subjective portion wasn't good enough to get offered an interview. I think this is crap though because I got into Tufts, Penn, Ohio, Purdue and Cornell. So if you want personalized feedback on your application I would do the application review that is offered after admissions are done.
