Minnesota

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What I found odd was that I exceeded the average GPAs/GRE scored listed. And there was no mention of my non-academic qualifications. Only academic. And still no interview.

Okay...now I'm freaked out. Would you mind giving us your stats? I know I'll probably get my rejection/interview invite in a few days anyways, but I'd still like to know what Minnesota considers "not good enough" academically, if you were above average.

Would you mind giving your GPA stats for those of us who are also in the same boat?

My last 45 hrs. gpa was 3.59, pre-req gpa 3.61. If you were to look at my total cumulative, though, it's actually about 2.9. GRE 1240, but I've forgotten the breakdown. I hope this helps-

Only received my W2 in the mail today.... 1,153 applicants is a whole lot.... and with Minnesota taking only 36 OOS..... that's scaring me! I wonder how many of those applicants are in-state?

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!! This year or the next....

Yah...I'm hoping I'm just farther east and it's taking whatever letter is coming for me a longer time to get here...if there is a letter at all!

That's what I'm thinking too! I'm in NY. You know I'll totally be stalking the mailman tomorrow.

I applied to 8 schools and have yet to hear from any of them!!! I'm going crazy. Please Minnesota give me a letter :luck:

I am completely shocked that I got an interview invite for Minnesota, I'm OOS, and my GRE Quantitative score is terrible--it's less than 400. I've taken the test multiple times, and I have not managed to raise my Q score. Verbal was 670. I was not expecting to receive any invites apart from University of Glasgow, which does not look at GRE scores. Maybe it's a mistake, or they're inviting me there so they can throw things at me.

Rejection today 🙁

Got my rejection today too. Sigh.

Hobiecat, i you don't mind me asking, how is your GPA?

It's 3.65 cum, 3.57 required courses, so it's not outstanding or anything. I'm baffled, I completely expected a rejection letter.

Got my rejection today as well. Letter said "Although your academic credentials meet the expectations of the committee...the evaluation of the subjective portion (personal statement, animal and veterinary experience, etc) were not as strong as other applicants" Funny thought MN would be one of the better chances I had as an OOS. Oh well I have two rejections so far, guess I will just have to wait and hear from the other 4 schools I applied to...Not having much hope hear anymore though! Congrats to those that have interviews, maybe I will have better luck next year with another year of veterinary experience under my belt, guess 4 years research experience with animals doesn't count for ****!🙁

Got my rejection too 🙁
I'm trying to console myself with the fact that I hate behavioral interviews anyway 👎

I agree!! At least I don't have to stress about that...I bet I would have been pretty awkward. :scared:

Yeah, that's me so far. Although I didn't have nearly as much (okay, any) experience in research with animals like you did. I know they don't offer it explicitly in the letter, but I'm going to e-mail/call them anyways to see if there is anything in specific I can work on over this next year.

Rejected as well. Academics were good, subjective was not. I guess I kinda expected that cause I only have about 1200 hours of experience between SA/research/zoo vet. That's all I could fit in my summers because I was unable to work through the year because I was a D1 athlete. I guess they didn't weigh that part in there too much. Oh well. 1st rejection, it wasn't one of my top schools so it doesn't sting toooo badly, although it still does.

Sorry to hear about MN, shuvball! Hang in there 🙂

Do you think that once they made the first cutoff, they looked at the academic portion at all? I mean, did they assign scores on academics, then scores on subjective, and add them, or did they just not consider academics at all after the first 480? I ask because I was hoping my GPA/GRE could kind of make up for the not tremendous amount of animal/vet experience, but if they didn't consider GPA/GRE after the first cutoff, then that probably killed my application.

Thanks Clawsbeatskin, still have 3 more schools I haven't heard from at all, 2 decisions pending (TAMU/OSU), and my KSU interview, so I'm still hopeful! 🙂

My letter said that the academic part was the first stage of the review and I didn't get past that. I know that is how it goes, not just with UMinn but most schools, but truthfully, it kind of annoys me as I am an older student working 2 jobs to pay for all the science classes that I haven't taken since high school (over 20 years ago - and we never had Organic Chem there!) plus managing to own a house with all involved there and doing tons of volunteer work, and they can't get past my grades?

I got an interview invite in the mail today from Minnesota... 🙂

Sorry about all the rejections guys, and congrats to others that got interviews!

Rejection from Minnesota most likely due to my low GRE score..my GPA stats made the cut however.
Congrats to all who got interviews 😎

Still nothing from MN. I am seriously irritated with the US Postal Service. I still haven't gotten my IL letter either. I may expire before Monday.

Interview today... just so you all know, it was sent to my parents, in a populated area of Washington state!

EDIT: question - what do you guys think about having a strong preference for which interview date? Do you think they'd be offended if I emailed and requested a certain weekend?

Congrats on the interview ad0ggy07 and everyone else!

I got my interview letter today too!

Hoodle: I don't think it would be a problem to email Minnesota and ask for a particular date. Out of the 230 people they invited for interviews, I am sure than more than one person has a conflict and will need to submit a date preference.

Got invited to interview today, but I'm going to be withdrawing my application first thing on Monday.

Wish I could share it with those of that got rejected.. sorry! hang in there, though... there's lots of other veterinary school fish in sea!

For those of you who got interview congrats! would you mind listing the types of animal experiences and possibly you GPA/GRE scores you have so I can know what to work onfor next year? I am especially interested in OOS, cause that's what I am. thanks!🙂

my animal experience is primarily with small animals at an emergency clinic for the past year. I've been full-time there for about 8 months and I've learned a TON about small animal medicine as well as improve on clinical skills (which I desperately needed!).... so about 1400 SA experience. my B.S. is in Zoology and I got to do a lot of hands-on experience with reptiles and small mammals due to my major. I also did an internship at the animal shelter near my school where I cleaned kennels, volunteered in the clinic and went on ride-alongs with the humane officers. I didn't have any research experience with animals in terms of laboratory work...

my overall GPA is a 3.3, my last 45 credit GPA is a 3.8, my req coursework GPA is a 3.7. and I really didn't do too well on my GREs... 1170 total... V:520, Q: 650, AW: 5.5, the quantitative portion was the part I could never seem to increase... very frustrating at the time!

I'm OOS also... so don't give up!!

and a couple hundred hours volunteering at an animal shelter

cum GPA 3.65
last 45 hours GPA 3.5

280 wildlife hosp intern

I hope this is helpful, and good luck to everyone.

last year, i remember them sending out an email with three different interview weekend dates for OOS folks and asking us to email them back with our ordered preferences (dates were first-come, first-serve, but i got my first preference with no problem). are they not giving you any choice this year? at any rate, i would think they'd want to accommodate in the event of a conflict.

good luck!

Question to those of you with multiple thousands of hours vet experience: did you have full time jobs for a significant period (I.e. more than a summer's worth), or did you just accumulate that working through summers, during the school year, etc.?

Sort of a combination-- my first clinic job was during the summer, and at the clinic near my undergrad school, I worked PT during school and full time in the summer for three years until I graduated. Now I work PT at two clinics.

I've been without computer access for the last few days, but I figured I'd update y'all - I got my rejection letter Friday. It said that I was academically strong enough, but had been weeded out for the subjective portion of the application. I was a bit surprised - I have quite a bit of experience, if not a lot of depth in any particular area (though it seems that many SDNers put me to shame in that regard). Can't say I was too shattered at not having to do the behavioral interview though

Hey MN folks- feel free to PM me with any questions! If you are coming out for an interview and would like a little tour around the school or the St. Paul campus outside of the whole stressful interview day (i.e. you want to know where you'll be interviewing beforehand), I'd be happy to show you around 🙂

Also, I don't want to give false hope to those who were rejected, but in my class there are a handful of out-of-staters who were rejected initially and then called during the summer to do a phone interview. Of course we all know that waitlists move differently every year...

That just seems like the most evil thing ever. Couldn't they just make an interview waitlist?

Finally got my letter, interview! I have to say I am surprised as my stats are not that stellar, there really seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, not that I am complaining. I'll head ya'll off at the pass:

GPA:3.4
GRE: 1430
Don't know the other GPAs as I never calculated them, but they can't be much higher.
100 hours equine
400 hours bovines
600 hours SA
20 hours exotics.
Various other hours for fostering, animal care etc.

Some of those bovine hours were at the AABP conference, shadowing a hoof trimmer and semen salesman, and taking an AI course to be certified to impregnate cows, the rest were under a vet while he made farm calls. I am also old (33), was an agricultural specialist in the Peace Corps, and used to ride semi pro for a cycling team, which may not make me a better student but at least makes me a interesting/weird applicant.

Take heart everyone, this is my second year applying, and I really think my application improved after I was rejected and learned what I needed to make to make it more successful this year.

Hi again Hoodle! To answer your question about interview date preferences, I don't think they would be offended at all! I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with all of the folks in admissions - I'm sure they'd understand!

Congrats!!!

p.s. I will be giving tours on the interview weekends, and look forward to meeting all of you who will be here! Also, feel free to email with questions, concerns, panic attacks, etc.

Couldn't they just make an interview waitlist?

They had a waitlist that they unexpectedly burned through, so they had to start calling up applicants that had initially been rejected. Those who got called sure didn't feel like it was evil- they felt like they got lucky!

I guess at the time, it would feel lucky. But it must have sucked, thinking you had absolutely no chance at all for months, and then suddenly getting an interview. I wonder how many people got in from that "waitlist" that wasn't?

Anyone in-state heard anything?

I'm having my friend check my mail for me while I'm away from school. Today she sent me an e-mail saying I had received a letter from the u of m saying I was one of 480 considered for an interview. But then...that of those 480 only 250 would actually be interviewed. Does this mean I'm just an alternate? What did your letter say? Thanks.

I think that you need to get more info. My rejection letter said that, but that info would probably have been in the interview invite letter as well. Maybe you could call your friend and have them read the whole letter. Good Luck:luck:

I would just call the school, the student services office is extremely friendly and helpful.

I was just wondering if anyone has heard back about their preferences for scheduling interview days.

I haven't heard anything from them yet Hobiecat. Since we got the email last week on the 15th, we should be hearing back sometime this week! =)

They finally sent out the interview times... it's a PDF attachment organized by VMCAS number.

Anyone else interviewing Friday the 22nd?

I don't know--I didn't get mine yet.

Mine is Sat the 16th in the morning, which is great as I won't spend all day freaking out. I almost had a heart attack when I couldn't find my #, but then realized there was more than one page. Duh.

Hobiecat, if you are dying to know, PM your VCMAS # and I can look it up.
