minority or not?

you are not sure if you are a minority? that's interesting. i think it's by race and ethnicity.

If my grandmother was 1/2 Cherokee, can my 1/8th swing me an advantage??

Joking, of course. Sort of.

Yes.

In fact, I had a friend who is full Asian, but applied as a Hispanic because he could sorta pass as one to gain an advantage(he got in). They don't check and they can't check. All the self-report stuff do put honest applicants at a disadvantage.

ok let me rephrase...so I am white, but nationality wise I was born and grew up in another country...the total population of my nationality in US is less then a million...do I in any way qualify as a minority?

Sorry, what's the difference between race and ethnicity?

from Wikipedia:
Race or racial group usually refers to the categorization of humans into populations or groups on the basis of various sets of heritable characteristics. The most widely used human racial categories are based on salient traits (especially skin color, cranial or facial features and hair texture), and self-identification. (i.e. mostly based on outer appearance)

Ethnicity or ethnic identity is marked by the recognition from others of a group's distinctiveness and the recognition of common cultural, linguistic, religious, behavioral or biological traits, real or presumed, as indicators of contrast to other groups. (i.e. mostly based on cultural, linguistic, behavioral, or religious traits)

If I had to do it over again I would mark that I was hispanic.

According to the definition of Hispanic they consider Spain a part of that.
My Grandmother grew up in New Mexico (100% Spanish though) and was born right around the time New Mexico was admitted as a state. She did not even speak English until she was about 10.

I am 1/4th Spanish (and actually 1/8th Blackfoot Indian). But I look like the Sweedish 1/2 I have in me lol so I did not think they would believe me.

But come to think of it, I have a pretty good geneology book proving that I am (unless my mom slept around) and if they ever were to question me I could whip that book out and prove them wrong.

I say do it!!

Ok so race=phenotype and ethnicity = culture, right?

On p.8 of this file:http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/reserving/registrationdemo.pdf

How come so much careful attention is paid to distinguishing Hispanic Ethnicities, and not other ethnicities? I'm confused.
