the sad part is who do they catagorize as being a minority.

Are Asian consider to be minority? In my school, they rule the school about 1 in 2 is Asian. I am a white guy; but I grew up in a largely Hispanic rural community. 60% Hispanic, 10% Black and 20% minority Whites, and other. For some reason, I never make to many friends as readily with Whites as I do with Hispanics. I do not think a person who is minority but parents were highly educated and well-to-do should be considered a "minority". I think the real (down to the roots) definition of minority is so one who have been at an educational, social, and economic disadvantage when attempting to get an education. I am white but I am not someone who has had every thing given or explained to me as I journeyed through college. I hope the adcom are not that ignorant to think Black means struggle, and White means at an advantage.

thaxil,

your post is so true.
now, here is the interesting part of the whole minority/majority issue.
if you are someone like me (middle eastern), you are considered white.

i can't get any more disadvantaged than being from Afghanistan where education is not even talked about right?

wrong!
i am considered white and not a minority......
how is that?
go figure that out...

I think the many problem is that people and schools classify minority as being from a certain race. Yeah, it is good to have diversity as far as race goes, but I think the purpose of affirmative action it to uplift communities or groups of people who have not had the opportunity as others in obtaining higher education. I know a lot of people on this board would not understand what the hell I am complaining about; but I do not expect them to understand. They grew up in a different world or environment then I or others in my community. I felt a lot of the trouble I had early in my college education was not that I was lazy for did not care as other may assume. I had significant challenges graduating from a community, which it school preformed in the 30-40% on national standardized exams. My parents were all to busy trying raise me and my other 6 siblings then to focus on my ascertainment of a quality education. I graduated high with little math skill, study skills, and incapable of writing at a 8 grade level. I was screwed to start; I only went to college to test the waters, and found it extremely difficult to manage while working fulltime to fund my independent living. I probably would not need to work full time if I was aware of financial aid. This unawareness was partially do to being a first generation college student, which also effect the way I dropped class. This an other factor really impacted the early success I had in school. However, once I sorted everything out, my academic achievement showed my determination and strength.

well, I went to this country at age 14 with no English and money. I worked 2 jobs ( McDonald after school and did landscaping in the weekend) while struggling in High school. But my hard work had paid off, I graduated with rank 256/400 in one of the top 5 high school in the country at that time. I was offered 2 yrs scholarship from my local university. Same story in college, worked 2 jobs (~70hrs/week) with 16-18 hrs/ of course load. I graduated with 2 degrees in 6 yrs (EE and Med Tech). Now with family and kid, I'm looking forward for my dental school next year. Most of my friends who graduated from dental and medical school would share the same life story of mine. My philosophy of life: Work hard and it will pay off no matter what race are you.

You have definitely overcome adversity Larry. All I am saying is that minority should not be classified as a set of races. I would consider you to be a minority or a phenomena. It was statistically against you to have achieved all you did. You must have had a very strong vision to have worked as hard as you did. What is more significant: your achievement from where you started or someone else, who happens to be minority, achieving the same but with parents who are dentists and great social, educational, and economical beginning prior to entering college?

I am someone who values personal responsibility highly. This is way I am here obtaining an education. Someone else 3.0 is not the say as another persons 3.0. Every has had difficulties and they all effect us differently.

Work hard and hang in there buddy ... You're still young.

By the way, in my opinion, only people with mental and physical disability in this country are considered at educational, social, and economic disadvantage. Do you agree ?

I would eliminate the word only in your question; otherwise, I do agree. These people are never given a chance. Everyone assumes they are a lost cause with out even attempting to help them. They go to school to be placed into a holding pin without be given an education. So, of course these people are at a disadvantage; I know, I have worked with autistic children for two years. Many of them are capable of far more then people allow them to express. I am sympathetic to there struggle in part because as a child I too was classified as behaviorally and intellectually incapable of improvement. Part of the reason why my education was so poor entering in to college had to do with my placement into special educational course. These courses did nothing to help us; they only were a sort of holding pin. I was told, I had learning disorder called ADD. Now it is not classified as a learning disorder, and I do not believe in the diagnosis. This diagnosis placed me into these classes and on Ritalin (speed like drug) for 10 years. I fought against my parents wishes to be taken out and was eventually placed into mainstream course.

I have now caught up to my piers in college now am currently not at any disadvantage educationally, social, maybe economically (but it does is not matter). However, my gpa has not caught up as fast. It is not a black and white issue (figuratively).
