Hi, I want to apply to medschool but have 2 misdemeanors when I was 18-19 years old (DUI and Fake-ID) I'm 27 now... Does anyone know any lawyers that specialize in medschool/licensure issues? Thanks.

Are you from Illinois? Were your misdemeanors there?

I doubt this is the place where people are going to be able to give you good advice about specifically which lawyers to choose. This board might be a good place to get information about how the convictions can affect your chances of being accepted and about getting licensure once you graduate.

It'd definitely be best to get them expunged if you can. If you know any lawyers who live in your area, ask them if they have any colleagues or friends who specialize in this area.

Yeah I thought I might be reaching... I've just had a hard time finding the right "type" of lawyer to contact. Every google search brings up a ton of malpractice lawyers and I know I dont want to talk to them!

Google the name of your state (or even city, if you live in a large metro) and "bar association." Depending on where you live, there may be a number of associations that come up in the search. Many, if not all, of these bar associations (not to be confused with the state entity that actually licenses attorneys) will have a referral service and they can direct you.

You should talk with a lawyer in your own state but I know for a fact that in states with tough DUII laws, a DUII conviction can never be expunged - because the legislatures want to increase the penalties for multiple DUII over time, so the previous DUII convictions can never go away, via expungement. My guess is that you are stuck with this DUII and it definitely is going to hurt your application. But check with a lawyer who specializes in defending DUII cases in the state where you live.

No lawyer will specialize in "med school licensure issues", because there is simply not enough business to pay the bills from the couple of clients a year you might get in your state from this. More likely you will have to find someone with a much broader practice area (criminal law, professional liability, etc).. I agree with the poster who suggested you contact your state's bar for some suggestions.
