Hi,

My ~#3 ranked program called today while I wasn’t available and left a nice “loved you on interview day” kind of message. they recommended calling with any questions.

Quick question, call back or let it ride?

Other option would be an email -

Dear _,

I received your voicemail and just wanted to say thank you for checking in. I really liked X, Y, and Z about your program and can definitely see myself being successful at _ residency program [assuming this is accurate - if they're your #3 I assume you'd be reasonably happy there. There are a lot of ways to say "I like your program" without having to lie about their place on your ROL]. I will be sure to reach out to you with any questions.

Thanks, _

Me: : Disappointed you had to reply with a serious post :

Is this some sort of measure of how much a program wants you? is it bad that none of my interviews have done anything like this *nervous laughter*

Oh sweet lord no. There are countless stories on SDN about some poor sap who got the inevitable "OMG you're my soulmate, we are ranking you #1" from a PD only to then go UNMATCHED at that program despite ranking them #1. It means absolutely nothing. It's akin to your long lost Nigerian Prince great uncle who wants to leave you a fortune but needs $500 to arrange the wire transfer... cause you know... that fortune is all in gold... which he is going to wire to you... but doesn't have cash....

There are even accounts of programs doing this to applicants who rank them #1 that don’t even fill in the match. So programs are allowed to send these letters to applicants that they don’t even rank at all but if students do the same they are considered unprofessional scum.

Gotta love how almost every aspect of medical training feels like it’s designed to screw students👍

In the words of the inimitable Alfie Solomons of Peaky Blinders: "Big ****s small always, actually."

It really does though! The sheer expense of all non-tuition related costs is a barrier to entry to matching anywhere outside your home program.

If you really want to join me in my jadedness:

My buddy from undergrad just got a masters in healthcare administration. Hospitals are literally flying him across the country to wine and dine him right now to interview for management jobs paying at least 80k/year to start. He pays for nothing on any of these interviews and it’s basically like a mini-vacay. He fully admits most of his degree is responding to discussion board posts, writing papers about nothing, and using buzzwords that sound important but don’t actually mean anything.

Oh yeah, but residents can’t get free food in the cafeteria...

Guess I found my plan B

Lol dude, post interview contact from programs literally means *nothing*

Like as in they'll contact every single person they're ranking with the same message. Don't fall for this annual cheap trip.

Im aware. But can a program go from ranking you highly to ranking you lower by not reciprocating their love?

I hate everything about post IV communication, but I missed all my calls from programs just due to poor timing, but I definitely called them all back. Thought it was a respectable thing to do. Although, I'd just recommend you talking about how you appreciate the call/interview/kind words, etc and not talk about the rank list or ranking them highly since it can be awkward.

If I could go back to early October or so, I would send all of my programs I applied to a letter saying “I won’t be sending any post-IV communication to any programs”
