Hi everyone, I am a first year starting this fall. I just found out there is a veterinary conference in the specialty I am interested in, close to my school this fall. A DVM friend/mentor of mine really wants me to meet her out there for the conference. However, the conference is obviously going to be held during class times. What is the general concensus on vet students missing classes to participate in/volunteer at veterinary conferences? Any stories?

You should check with your school to see what the policy is; at Va Tech you are not supposed to go to any conferences your first year, though a few made it out with permission from above I think.

Usually its ok if you get a permission slip signed from your dean or somebody, and present it to all your professors. It can kinda suck to get all the missed notes though, and to make up labs or tests if you missed them. I'm sure it varies from school to school, so I would email and ask.

I want to head up to the AABP in Omaha in September, just already debating if I want to go badly enough to miss a couple days of classes

It also depends on the instructors you have that quarter/semester. I know that some instructors think it is a waste of time, especially first year, when most of the lectures are going to be over your head anyway.

Yea, I figured the lectures would be over my head, but they had a few pretty cool wetlabs available to students that I was interested in, plus some volunteer opps for students that I figured would help me to network a little.

I had no idea that some schools would "let" you go, I gues I will just wait and see then.

That's surprising to hear that some schools either won't let their 1st year students go, or discourage them from going. It would make sense if it wasn't possible to reschedule something, but other than that, it doesn't make sense to me why they would care if they went.

Lots of people went to conferences during my first year, and as far as I know, no one ever had trouble rescheduling test/quizzes/assignments. Professors generally were happy for us to go and encouraged it, and were great about rescheduling stuff.

As far as classes go, if you really learn best by hearing the lecture, it might be a little harder for you to miss class (but some schools record lectures, so then it really wouldn't matter if you could just watch them when you got back). Most of the professors at our school put their lecture notes online so you can get the notes if you miss. It really has a lot to do with your learning style and with how comfortable you are missing class. There are some people in my class that hardly ever come to lecture, and they do just fine.

It may be trickier if you have any required attendance classes, but your professor and you may be able to work something out if that were to come up (we only had a few required attendance classes 1st year that were only scheduled once a week or a few times a month, and we could switch lab sections if we were going to be gone on the day our lab section was scheduled).
