Due to having to complete a prerequisite before med school begins, I will be missing orientation - I would be present for the first day of class. If I notify the school early, would I still be able to hold my position in the class?

Missing orientation might be a pretty big deal. Definitely ask your school about it.

definitely check and communicate well with the administrators. But some of my classmates missed orientation, but they informed the school ahead of time, and turned out ok. But if you don't talk to them and just disappear, they'd kick you out I would say.
