For the Missouri supplemental application, does anyone know what they mean when they ask for hours observing a veterinarian? Do they consider the hours spent working as a veterinary assistant hours observing a veterinarian? Or are these hours just strictly unpaid hours standing there watching a vet? Thanks in advance!

I'd imagine hours spent working as a vet assistant counts. You're still observing, just in a paid capacity.

I actually e-mailed the school because I had the exact same question! Here's the response I got: "Our application is requesting hours of experience having worked or observing a vet….but many applicants will list every hours even working in the kennels at clinics. We then ask for the number of hours while not observing a vet…such as owning the animal yourself and ask that you provide a brief description of activity, procedures observed. We can then sort out those students who have worked in the kennels from those that have been with vets….different experience totally. Those of you that have been vet assistants should count those hours as observing and give description as such."

I wonder what they mean by procedures observed? We only get 10 lines to document everything in and I don't know if they want every single procedure from blood draws to amputations or what. That line kind of worries me now cause I just kind of lumped it all into 'surgeries, routine care, and triage'.

A few examples that span the breadth of your experience would be sufficient since there isn't much room.

For example, if you've seen quite a bit of surgery you could say something like "spay/neuter, fracture repair, GDV." They can read between the lines there and see you've seen everything from routine surgery to emergency stuff.

Hope that helps...good luck with the application process and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

do they really want us to list ownership?? I mean, i've owned dogs for like 20 years now...I don't really want to count up those hours.

Also, do they only want a description of our activities if we've observed a vet?

ie. I have experience with zoo/wildlife but it was animal experience, not vet. Based on the wording, it doesn't seem like they want a description for that...?

When I applied there was a "Veterinary Experience" section and an "Animal Experience Section." The zoo/wildlife experience should be listed under Animal Experience if there was no veterinarian present. I don't remember including ownership, but if you see something different, by all means pay attention to that.

I don't think they want hours of ownership, just hours you spent observing a vet.
