"...but an app that could save a trip to the doctor's office is a wonderful thing regardless of where you are."

Why is that a wonderful thing?

Wow, that thing could even make opticians in BC obsolete!!

How will we get screwed next?

Could be a boon for developing third world countries, but do you guys think something like this would affect optometry in developed countries?

Most of us in "third world countries" don't think separating refraction from eye care is a good thing. We also believe in using appropriate technology. I'm not sure a smartphone is appropriate technology for use in remote villages with no or random electricity.

Nah, the whole system is flawed in many ways.

1) There's a difference between refracting and prescribing.

2) The eye is not just a visual system, as one team member pointed out in the video. There is the anatomy and physiology to examine also, which can only be done by a doctor.

3) I can use my retinoscope to do the same thing, and MUCH cheaper than that!

4) I see people get tricked up performing visual fields all day, can you imagine this!!! YIKES!

The people at MIT should focus more on finding a solution to capping the oil leak in the Gulf; a much more worthier cause!

Yeah, this app is pretty stupid. I don't think it'll really have a serious effect on optometry, I mean really? Some people might use the "prescription" to order glasses online but these are the people that are going to come into your office and demand a new rx without wanting to be dilated or bothered with anything else.
