It might be a stupid question.

Mitosis starts with 2n and ends with 2n
meiosis starts with 2n and ends with 1n
what is n?

for example, if 2n = 8, i know that n should be 4 but 4 of what?
is it number of cell?

2n diploid number of chromosomes, whereas n is haploid number of chromosomes. In humans we have 23 chromosomes therefore our somatic cells will each have 2n at the end of mitosis, whereas our gametes (sperm and egg cells) produce a haploid number 👎 at the end because the sperm and egg unite in order to form a diplod n + n = 2n I'm not sure if i answered your question but hope this helps!

n=4 means there are 4 individual chromosomes

at 2n=8 for a diploid cell, there are 4 pairs of chromosomes (8 chromosomes in total)
