A questions asked which gas will be produced when Cu(s) is mixed with HNO3

Writing the reaction in my head, I arrived at the conclusion that H2 has would be released, which made sense stoichiometrically. (Cu +2HNO3 --> CuNO3(2) +H2

The answer is NO. I don't fully understand how I would get this except through just memorizing this tidbit beforehand.

Thanks!

Yup. Everybody gets that one wrong on CBT 3. Remember, the money metals (copper silver gold) won't react normally in an acid environment. That's why we use them for money.

Just memorize and move on. You will likely never run across this scenario again in your career.
