I need the skinny on how much my disciplinary probation is going to kick my ass.

Happened first month of my first semester of my freshman year so I was obviously a *******.

long story short: I had never been exposed to alcohol in high school so I signed up for substance free dorming and i get paired with a kid who was a complete drunk. he coerced me to go out, i had a little too much fun, got written up, etc. etc. disciplinary probation...

I haven't been in trouble of any kind ever since, and I have a firm moral and ethical compass; this was simply a one time lapse of judgment-i had no idea that etoh was going to effect me so badly (damn alcohol dehydrogenase!!!!!)

^^ have to agree 😉

this thread title did have a longer mmmmmmmmm though, so maybe this thread is the result of more inner thought and will thus produce better results.

Or it's the result of more kittens!!

Eek. i hope he doesn't think we're giving him crap though...i mean if i had a bagel for every time i screwed up and made multiple new topics for whatever reason, i'd have...a hell of a lot of bagels 😳

If it's on your permanent record...ouch 🙁 That's gonna be tough. Where are you right now? Like, jr/sr? i mean people sort of expect you to screw around a little the moment you get away from your parents...hell i went to Canada and got pregnant, you drinking and getting a little rowdy isn't all THAT bad. Unless you did something really insane...did you blow up part of the school? That'll probably keep you out. But if it wasn't too bad, you can probably just call it a "youthful indiscretion" and not be too horribly marred by it.

i have no clue what this means

but on a side note, "army bound" are you getting the army to pay through medschool? What kind of deal did you get with them
you've never seen Mr Deeds?

I was really set on going into the army through either the HPSP or USUHS, but have decided against it after talking with the nice folks in the military medicine subforum here on SDN.

I wouldn't have any because I would have eaten them as I obtained them.

Not into bagel collections? Whatever, i guess you're still decently cool.

But now i want a bagel 🙁

epr1, we'll just horribly maim this one with randomness, drunkenness, maybe a few pictures of kittens...the usual 😍 want a bagel?

break into the school and destroy all record of shortcomings

They probably wouldn't appreciate that either, especially after you blew up their fine arts building...

oh snap! 😱

Really...i'd own up to it. Admit you screwed up, and let your record illustrate that you learned from it and that you are NOT, in fact, a total douchebag. That won't be hard...right? 😉

thanks for the merge haha,

I'm going into my senior year, and have my entire AMCAs app figured out except for the part that asks me about this... I didn't do anything crazy, I wasn't even drunk by the time the EMT's came and checked me out. There were more repercussions for me because I "violated" the substance free policy i signed up for... even though i'm on a "dry campus" go figure

Yeah...really that's just not all that bad. i mean if you'd, like, parked your car in the library, that'd cause you some problems. But this really isn't terrible. Don't worry so much

well you have to tell them what happened. i don't think it's a huge deal, i think quite a few pre-meds end up with MIPs and the like.

Yeah I just wish they had given me more space for my PS to let me explain what happened I'm midway through polishing my statement and it crushes the 5700 word limit AMCAs allotted. whooopsie....

at any rate thanks for all your help, I feel a lot better 👍

it doesnt need to be explained in detail, just say something like "After receiving disciplinary action for violating my school's no-alcohol policy, I got back on the right foot and... "

i'm not sure i'd address it in anything more than an offhand remark about it. It's a blemish on your record, it's best not to draw unnecessary attention to it. Have a good explanation ready for interviews, because they'll probably ask about it, but use your PS to sell yourself in the best possible light.

i don't mean to burst your bubble but the character limit is 5300, so you might have just completely obliterated it.

maybe it'll show off my more human side or some bull**** like that 😎

i mean house after all is a drug addict and he's still a beast right???

haha yeah that's what i meant (i'm tired as balls right now)

i have something like 6000 characters but I'm going to cut it down a bunch

What ever you do, don't tell them it was the other guy's fault. He didn't coerce you; you decided to go out against your better judgment.

I doubt they'd even look twice at it, but they may ask. Just say, "I lived in substance free housing and went out one night and had some drinks" or whatever happened.

At this point DDSbound breaks into the conversation and yells:

OMG HOUSE MD IS FICTIONALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's going to hurt... hope you have a lot of money saved up 'cause you'll want to apply broadly.

No, it won't kill you.

You will have the ability to explain yourself in an extra essay:

"Have you ever been the recipient of institutional action?" (disciplinary, academic, etc.)

I forget the exact amcas character length.

But you'll get your chance to explain yourself. What you'll want to do is talk about how you were young and stupid and how much you've grown since then.

Expect to have it mentioned during interviews.

Yup, it sucks but you'll manage.
