Hi,

I'm new to SDN, if this is the wrong forum, please let me know!

I was hoping someone out there could let me know if they had any advice on mnemonics for memorizing the functions/nuclei and tracts of the cranial nerves - so many! Especially the vagus and trigeminal, they give me some trouble.

Thanks guys!!

hey thanks tyson!

i'm not even a med student yet, still an undergrad taking a course in mammallian neuroanatomy and there's tons of stuff to know. thought that the allopathic forum where everyone is a med student would be a good place to post this kind of thing.

thanks

Well, lets start with a pneumonic to memorize the names of the cranial nerves. I'll keep this one clean, although there are dirty ones.

On old Olympus' towering top, A Fin and German Viewed Some Hawks

1. Olfactory
2. Optic
3. Occulomotor
4. Trochlear
5. Trigeminal
6. Abducens
7. Facial
8. Auditory (Vestibulocochlear)
9. Glossopharyngeal
10. Vagus
11. Spinal Accessory
12. Hypoglossal

Cranial nerves are either motor, sensory, or both. There is a pneumonic for that.

Some say money matters but my brother says big boobs matter more.

S= sensory m= motor b= both

so...
Olfactory = sensory- sense of smell via olfactory bulbs through the cribiform plate of the ethmoid bone

optic = sensory- sight via the optic nerve

occulomotor = motor- most extrinsic eye muscles except superior oblique and lateral rectus, also constriction of pupil

trochlear = motor- motor to superior oblique muscle of eye

trigeminal = both- sensory to forehead, upper and lower teeth, cheeks- motor to muscles of mastication

abducens= motor- to lateral rectus muscle of eye

facial = both- sensory (taste ant 2/3 of tongue, submandibular gland)- motor to muscles of facial expression

auditory = sensory- hearing, to cochlea and vestibular canals

glosspharyngeal = both- motor to stylopharyngeus muscle only, sensory-taste post 1/3 of tongue, parotid gland

vagus = both- motor- pharyngeal muscles, laryngeal muscles, chest, abdominal contents, also sensory

spinal accessory = motor- to trapezius and sternocleidomastoid

hypoglossal = motor- extrinsic muscles of the tongue

This is a good summary. You also need to know the parasympathetic ganglion of the head. Ciliary ganglion, ptergygoid, otic, and submandibular. (This is top of my head, but I think these are the right names)

Also, remember that the sympathetic innervation of the head all comes from the superior sympathetic ganglion and travels with the various cranial nerves.

Hope this helps you. I know this is probably more than you need for your class, and the various things here apply to human anatomy. I didn't go into the various branches of the cranial nerves or the divisions of the trigeminal. Let me know if you need anything else.
