module system?

Can anyone please tell me what is meant by "the module system" in some dental schools? how does it work?

A module system, as I understand it, exists as a way of teaching the curriculum. More or less, instead of taking 6-9 courses all by different instructors all throughout one semester or quarter, you have short term courses that will meet say, for 2 weeks for 4 hours every day and during that time you learn everything you would have learned in the course had it been 10 weeks, 2 days a week, for 1.5 hours. It's done more for didactic courses so that you learn it all at once in great detail without other courses to distract you and then you take a final and then you move on to the next class.

I could be wrong, but I think that's how they do it.

I know ASDOH students have completed their module on Anatomy and Physiology about 2 weeks ago and have now moved on to Biochemistry. From what my friend said who is a first year, they spend the whole day on one subject ex: biochem. I know with ASDOH since it is a small private school, they do not have a full time faculty of professors as would a public university such as USC or a larger private school such as Midwestern, so they fly in professionals where they stay for a couple weeks till the module is over, then they go back to research or whatever they were doing before. The response from the students at ASDOH has been pretty positive.

By USC, you mean South Carolina?

Because USC (SoCal) is private.

I actually ment socal. My bad, I thought they were a public school. I guess that makes sense because UCLA isn't too far down the road.

we work on a module system, what we learn about every discipline comes back to the theme of the module. our first module just eased us into school it was all epi. now we about to finish up foundations of life science next we have heart and lung in health and disease. we have other course on the side, some self taught others not.

haisha hit it right on. our modules are usually one week, and the more in-depth ones are two weeks (biochem, anatomy, cardiopulmonary), and head and neck anatomy was three weeks long. we have one class for that time and it's usually about a 6-7 hour day on that subject. There are quizes throughout the week, and our finals are on every monday. it works, because there's no juggling of what you have time to study. it's super focused and it works great! i love it!
