I just got my molar 18 extracted. I don't want to make an implant. Perhaps a bridge which is simpler, cheaper, less painful and less prone to infections / complications.

But the best option is to just live without this molar. So my questions are:

1) Will my teeth shift or get affected by the absence of the molar?

2) Will the upper teeth fall and if yes, how long does it usually take?

I am really considering just forgetting about this and if later (how later!? question 2) the upper teeth starts to fall I will just remove it as well.

I thought #17 was the wisdom tooth and if you had it, you were granted wisdom. If you still have yours, you should, hence be wise.

So since you are currently wise, hence the #17 still being present, then why are you asking for dental advice on a public internet forum that is occupied by dental students and dental residents? If you get it extracted, would you be 3/4 wise? 75% maybe?

Just some thoughts to ponder.

It was molar 18, sorry. 17 is gone long time. Hahahaha. You are a funny person.

universal numbering system in the USA has you 17 the wisdom tooth and 18 the one in front of it.
international numbering system everywhere else in the world has you 18 the wisdom tooth and 17 the one in front of it.

you can live without tooth, or teeth, or all of your teeth.
you don't need teeth.

millions and billions of people around the world live with multiple missing teeth.

why wait? do it now. you could've done it the same time you had the lower tooth pulled... you would go through the recovery only once.

p.s. don't take medical advice on the internet, go visit your dentist.

I've thought about this before. What would I do if I lost a 2nd molar?

I'd probably do nothing haha.

1st molar or forward, implant.

This is my opinion pertaining to GTFOOMICT's statement...not for the guy getting advice from internet hooligans

I'd get an implant as soon as i could. Once that opposing molar starts to supraerupt you're looking at possible problems down the road.

If you want dental treatment advice, please go to your dentist (going back to the one who took the tooth out is a good start). First of all, no one can give you exact advice without doing a clinical exam, etc. Secondly, Asking for dental advice on this forum is against the forum rules.

I don't really care if you get an implant, a bridge or do nothing...and since you aren't my patient and I don't have any idea what your teeth look like or how they come together, I can't advise you well.

I can however tell you that if you had #18 removed and #17 is long gone, you can't do a bridge (at least not a conventional one) to replace #18.

I'd also point out that bridges aren't really that much cheaper or less prone to infection than an implant. Implants are safe and don't have a high infection rate. There also isn't a lot of literature or experience that supports the idea that bridges are less painful than implants to have done. I've seen thousands of crowns and bridges with recurrent dental infections, but have almost never seen implants fail due to infection.

There are many ways implants can fail just like any other dental restoration, including infection.
Implant is not fail proof.
Just like any other dental restoration it takes a good planning and well trained clinician to restore a missing tooth space. It's also up to the patient to care for the restoration.
