Hi,

I recently did a search on Freida for molecular pathology fellowships, and I was a little surprised that it only turned up 7 programs scattered around the country.

I was under the impression that DNA and genomics was a rapidly growing area of path, the "frontier" of the field, so to speak.

Does this sound right? Does anyone know if there are any plans to add more of these fellowships? Are pathologists with these credentials highly sought after in the marketplace?

Thanks.

Take a look at this list.

There are not a ton of them. And, yes molecular is going to be big, it is just starting to get into the mainstream.

I make it a point on every interview I have gone on to ask about Molecular Path. Some places have you rotate while doing CP, others AP. Most programs I visited had an "improving" or "expanding" molecular path department. I got the sense that teaching it to residents and fellows is still being worked out in many places, and a lot of times residents have to be a bit proactive in this area. Part of the problem is that there are so many areas of path that it takes up, and there doesn't seem to be a clear definition. Some places consider PCR for tuberculosis ID a microbiology task, others molecular path. Also includes tumor identification, virology, genetic diseases, etc. Amazing possibilities and I want to make sure I get clued in during my training.
