I'm looking at job opportunities for my postbac year or 2 before applying to grad schools. I've started to do a little networking with alumni who are working in labs but feel weird asking the crucial issue of how much they are making. So can anyone give me a rough estimate of how much one could expect from a lab/clinical assistant job at a university or hospital? I want to compare with the NIH fellowship which is $23,800 and seems a little low, but I guess it would be worth it for the experience.

I've heard anything from 16k to 40k. The 16k is unusually low and the 40k is very, very unlikely. It just depends on the locale and the grant money available. My guess is that the mean is somewhere around 25-30k. Enough to live on in most places, but don't expect to be rolling in it. Far more than you'll make as a grad student, anyway.

25-30k is the pay range for a research tech position in a neuroscience lab at a boston hospital. seems to be consistent with similar positions in this area.
