what other careers compare to the salaries of general prac's in dentistry? i have heard the obvious stories of where ppl in business and law make more, however, it comes late in their careers usually and after they hav pulled several years of 70-80 hour workweeks, getting their mba's, and getting to the top positions. on the other hand, dentists may work 30-35 hours later in their careers after establishing their practices and pull in around 200,000 (for general pracs) almost as much as them. let me know if u can what is the deal with this stuff. thanks

I don't know of any career paths that lead to the guaranteed high earnings dentistry has to offer. Well, medicine, I guess, but MDs just work altogether too much.

If you are looking to make millions, dentistry isn't the place for you. But it will give a comfortable, reliable living. A lot of people look at the average earnings of a dentist and think of that as a base line, but you have to remember that 50% of dentists earn below the average. That's just how averages works. Still, you're not gonna starve. 🙂

I would say that alot of dentists are above the average (125,000) at least after having worked for 5 years and owning a practice. I use to do landscaping in the summers and I worked on a job for a specialist. His home was 3 million dollars, the landscaping was 500,000, and on and on. I think he made like close to a million every year. So if you want to make millions there are avenues in dentistry that can get you there. Buisness minded general dentists who invest there money and make it grow can be millionares. The skies the limit if you want it to be. Or if your happy working 3 days a week, living in a nice comfortable house, making 100,000-200,000, go right ahead! 😀

I heard of a contractor that switched career into dentistry and paid the entire expense of dental school out of his pocket. He was in his mid 40s though. Nobody can accuse this guy for being in it for the money.

While that is certainly possible, dentists who earn that much from dentistry are probably in the top 1% or higher of practices. More than likely this dentist managed a ton of other offices or businesses and had a substantial return on his investments each year. There is simply a limit to how much two hands can produce doing dentistry.

How far will money take you in Dentistry? Maybe you should get a flick called "The Dentist", about A multi-millionaire dentist, obsessed by cleanliness, begins to suspect his wife of having an affair. Thirty-six hours later the body count rises........ 😀

Lets just say, this is one of the flicks that started the whole "Dentists have high suicide rates" myth.

If you pass the 60 mins mark of the movie... you will be a very successful Dentist.

Are you talking about "The Secret lives of Dentists" I saw that movie  Has nothing to do with dentists...except for the fact that the two main characters are dentists. I don't know why they named the movie that!!

I've seen "The Secrets Lives of Dentists" and thought it was a rather boring film.

He is talking about a horror movie which was made in the 80's. Some blockbusters still carry it, it's very menacing.

How about the movie "The Little Shop of Horror"? That was a funny movie.

I think those horror movies gave the wrong impression of the profession to the public. Specially the tools they use in those flicks - people get flashbacks when they see the dentist.

My favorite musical...

"I'm.... your dentist!, your dentist...."

I liked "The Whole Nine Yards". I liked the scene where he's trying to commit suicide with the nitrous. Pretty accurate portrayal of our profession.

The Simpsons have funny episodes with dentists too. Mr. Burns considered dentistry at some stage in his life... but who could say "No" to a nuclear power plant?

😀

Every time I see this thread, I think it's about Monkeys in Dentistry - AHAHAHAHAHHAAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA 😛

Think the "laughing gas" would work on them?

(sorry - i get punchy in the wee hrs - back to learning about salivary gland physio)
