hey all -
does anybody know of good resources concerning physician scientist salaries? I realize this can be hard to find, depending on how much time one spends doing research vs. patient care, location, etc etc. My impression thus far is that while the MD/PhD generally guarantees a job for life, doing research and giving up patient care genearlly results in a smaller salary (though MD/PhDs get paid more than PhDs apparently). I'm trying my best to plan the next 15 years of my life, and would like to have an idea of what my income range will most likely be.

Thanks!

In general,

Work only in basic research, you get a PhD-type professor salary.

Work only in the clinics, you get a MD-type professor salary.

Work in both, you still get the same MD-type professor salary + what you get from grants [not sure about this one].

Work for the VA, and your salary doubles 🙂

People employed by your public medical school and hospital have their salaries available as a matter of public record. Check them out for a nice overview [UIowa I know has them online]

Yours,

Jason

Why is working for the VA paid so well? I did research at a VA hospital a while back, and I can't think of any reason why I'd expect to get paid more. Of course, I often had to wait longer at elevators for a senior citizen.

Maybe he meant "Work for industry and your salary doubles"?

I have heard some insane salary numbers for MD/PhDs who go into industry. Some big pharmaceutical company in Ann Arbor, MI (I forgot which one) will actually recruit the UMich MSTP students during any of their free summers for like $16k/summer. 1 or 2 a year will do it too from what I hear.

The beauty of working at a University versus the government is that you can receive "paybacks" from the pharmaceutical industry should you collaborate with them. I know of guy at Georgetown pulling over 300K (closer to half-mill depending on who you ask). Here at the NCI where I work, I'd guess the average MD/PhD makes about 150K.

I've also heard of MD/PhD's in industry making an average of 250K.

Blargh,

Just anecdotal evidence & rumors...

That's why I'm asking if anybody knows of places where I can find hard numbers.
