Anyone else experience flicking monitors during your practice/real testing day?

If you did, did switching to another station help? My guess is it didnt really, but most would just suck it up and take the test? Is my theory correct?

Let me know.

Thanks!

I had the subtle flicker.

I think it was because the testing center used those old, bulky monitors. I think they are called CRT monitors. I'm used to staring at my super-thin laptop all day, and if I do use a desktop it's usually a new flat screen also. It would be nice if those testing centers could suck it up and get some decent screens -- especially for the people like us who have to take marathon tests that last all day.

The flickering wasn't too bad. I definitely noticed it at first, and it bugged me. However, it's one of those things that your senses just tune out.
I didn't ask to be moved to another computer, but I did pop a few Advil during the breaks just to prevent any tension headache that might have developed from hours of squiniting and reading from a computer.

Good luck!

i hate computer facilities that don't crack up their monitor refresh rate to at least 85hz.

that flicker will give you a massive headache after 8 hours.

only 1 person, i'm suprised....

bascially i called promertic, they say you need special premission to change the setting....
nbme bascially said tough ****

Everyone I know thought the same thing, so you're not alone. With the price of flat pannels, there is no reason not to upgrade. Oh well, I got used to it after about 10 min.

dude, i hate monitors that flicker.

i assume the refresh was set at 60mhz. now, this is ok if it were a lcd, but it wasnt. for crying out loud, at least 75mhz please if u plan on reusing 1970's material.

/rant.

yup mine flickered
and yes, they are old-school monitors.
I brought reading glasses (which I used during qbank to prevent eye strain)
and adjusted the brightness/monitor position before I started.
But the crappy overhead lighting in prometric + the monitors made it annoying. You'll live.

good idea...I should probably bring sunglasses (and let people laugh/stare as they want) just in case, since flickering is quickly migraine-inducing for me... yikes...I'm hoping I'll get the one brand-new test center that must be out there somewhere...right?! 😛

i bet those would have to go in your locker. nice try tho. Ask upperclassmen from your school which center is the newest/nicest. I actually think I was at a pretty new center, but for people taking real estate, series7, or firefighter exams, the resolution or monitor quality just doesnt matter, and I think they do lots of those tests.

thanks everyone for the support.

the problem is i actually got a headache after 20 min at the practice test, i was looking at the monitor diagonally just so i dont have to look into the monitor directly by the end...

that's why i initiated the calls to see if they can just simply change the refresh rate... after all, it's so... ummm, 19---90's to change the refresh rate, and i can do it in less than 30 secs if i have the right access....

are you KIDDING me?

/rant /rant

i just feel it's such an important test, and no one is willing to make a simple adjustment.
at this point, i'd rather do a old fashion pencil paper test....

my screen was flickering in the beginning also, and the proctor offered to let me switch stations (I wasn't sure if it was my eyes because I hadn't slept enough?!?) but they were all...non-flat-screens, whatever you call it, so it wouldn't have made a difference.

I found that dimming the brightness on the screen helped a lot, and after the first block, I didn't notice it at anymore. (habituation?) 😛

I didn't notice the flickering of the monitor when I took the USMLE (I had read about it on SDN days before my exam). However, I had a massive headache by the 6th block and it didn't go away until the next morning. And I never get headaches!

yeah it sucks but what can we do 🙁

probably nothing this year. but you bet your a** i'm going to file a complain at end of my test. i'll report it as a irregularity. If nothing happens, hopefully they'll do something about it next year.

i'm also planning on writing a formal complain letter to both prometics and nbme. i think it's ridiculous that a simple fix is there but no one cares enough to do something about it....

what did we learn, primary prevention is better than treatment?
What a joke!

probably wont be a easy task to get that through their heads, esp. those people who're just working for nbme, and doesnt give a hoot about us....

i'll give a better detail account later, of all the hoops i tried to jump through and finally got the resolution of.... Tough ****, suck it up and deal

2 more days!

from what my friend (a self proclaim geek) that some people "see" it some people do not. maybe it's like that high pitch noise thing that someone can hear, but some cannot.... but even for people who dont hear it, it's still annoying after a while...?

I'm done!!!! here's my encounter with both prometrics and NBME

At my practice test, I realize that the moniter was flickering. And I realized it was because the refresh rate was set too low. after the practice test I asked the lady if i can check out other computers to see if they have different settings. She told me all the computers were off, but just ask for a different computer on the day of the real test, it should be fine then.

the next day, i call the center, just so i can make sure that i get a computer that has refresh rate at least 75. They informed me, there is nothing they can do, only the tech support can change the setting. i asked to speak to tech support, she told me that tech support will just tell me to change to a different station. i was like, are all the computers have the same setting, she told me yes. Then what's changing to a different station do?

Then I wrote to their headquarter about requesting a setting change. Here's what the trick part starts. They told me i'd have to have NBME to write to them with a request. Yeah, i thought that was a little ridiculous too.

Fine, I called NBME, got transfer a whole bunch times. Finally got to testing administring dept.
1. No one else ever complains about it, 1000s of people are taking this test every week, no one complains to us.
2. you have to write a written letter in and we'd think about it. (This was Tuesday, my test is on Saturday). I told her it would probably not get there and be processed by then. She then proceed to tell me, bascailly, she will do nothing even if she gets the letter. how nice of you, Ms. Davis.
Meanwhile, this was 4 days before my test, and i'm dealing with BullSh*t

Moral of the story.
1. if you have the same experience, please share with me. I'm determined to send a letter to them either way. It's such an EASY thing to fix. Refresh rate? com'on!
2. turn the contrast and brightness down.... it saved me today, but it is sort of tough when you have to read x-ray and ct's then you'd have to turn it up....

good luck all!
