This is to any current, or past residents at montefiore. I went up yesterday for my pre-employment health check, and was totally sketched by the walk from the train (Musholu Parkway stop) to the hospital -- and this is coming from someone who has spent the last 4 years in north philly. It seems like most people live in riverdale, or drive in to the hospital, so they dont have to walk from the subway. I
can anyone tell me what the area is like, is it safe to walk from the subway to the hospital? also, are there any alternate routes to get to monte from manhattan. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I am not a resident there, but having taken the train from Manhattan to interview there, I can tell you that the walk was pretty spooky, too. There were a few people hanging out in the shadows as I strolled past, though I had nothing done to me by them.

I heard, from a former student at Einstein, that the neighborhood, though scary looking, is actually relatively safe, because the Mafia runs it. Take that with a grain of salt, and look into local housing. Living across the street wouldn't be too dangerous, would it?

Welcome to NYC.

There are some parts of the Bronx that are safe. But safe is a relative term in the NYC.

I lived there for three years. I would be carefull at night if I were you.
In the day, your going to be too busy as an intern to worry about sunlight.

Best of luck.

One of my attendings interviewed at Hopkins / Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore 10 yrs or so ago & they told her that on average 1 nurse or resident got raped in the hospital car park per year!!!!!!!!!!!! 😱 😱 Surely that can't be true.

jdmd, do you know what the neighborhood around Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia is like? (Walnut St, in center city I think) Would it be possible to live in a small apartment within walking distance? Any idea what sort of rent I'd be looking at?

Thanks

I interviewed at Jacobi/Montifiore and found the subway ride from Manhattan to Pelham Parkway (on the 2 & 5 branch to Wakefield 241st.) and the walk to Jacobi no problem. However, we shuttled to Montifiore from there. At my interview at SUNY Downstate, I thought I was going to be mugged by a group of junior highschool students at the subway stop. I wonder how many residents there walk to the subway at night. As the residency director said when he greeted me: "What in the world brings you to East Flatbush, Brooklyn?"

As for Retinamark's question, Will's Eye Hospital happens to be in one of the best neighborhoods (the "gayberhood") in Philly. My GF has a studio about 2 blocks away from Will's and she lives a great urban life- great restaurants, cafes, shops are all within walking distance. You should be stoked.

I had the same experience with Jacobi-Monte as PDC at my interview. I remember asking the residents about travel-late at night many would suck it up and take a taxi if I remember correctly. Also both Jacobi and Monte have resident housing that is cheap and very close-the interns that I talked to felt safe living there.

Good Luck!
