Hello!

So I heard while at an interview for IM that allopathic residents can start moonlighting as an R3 whereas osteopathic residents can start moonlighting as an R2. Is this the case at most places where moonlighting is allowed or is it dependent on the residency program. I was just curious as to why such difference exists and this is not meant to bash one program over the other. Thanks!

It's probably related to the licensure issues in that particular state rather than a program specific thing. Some states have different licensing boards for DOs and MDs and in those cases they may have different rules for the number of training years required to get an unrestricted license, which you need to moonlight. Most states don't have that discrepancy but some do.

agree w/above.
There were definitely PGY2 IM residents @my residency program who did moonlight...but this was only the ones w/full medical licensure (i.e. had taken Step 3 and had a full state license approved/granted). I notice that where I'm training now, they only allow PGY 3 and above to moonlight...I don't know if that is our state rule in this new state that I'm in, and/or an institutional one.
