I m curious what percentage of psychiatry residents moonlight and how easy it is to find such opportunities? What type of work do most find in terms of setting/pay? Thanks.

This is very program and region specific. External opportunities are generally found through attendings, senior residents, recent grads, and fellows. I'm aware of some individuals who have done outpatient moonlighting (specifically telehealth for larger for-profit practices), but the bulk of moonlighting gigs are inpatient. Also, curious as to why you're asking this question as a current med school applicant?

I moonlighted my PGY 3-PG4 years at a outside hospital. During my time, I made a month from 10k to 27k a month moonlighting alone. The reason I was killing the high 20s is because when Covid hit, a lot of older doctors stopped working and they needed coverage so I picked up more shifts. Now it’s sub 10-15k a month

I do “internal” moonlighting and pick up an extra $1,000 per month or so. Not a lot but not bad for 8 extra hours of work plus 1-2 home call shifts (usually only 1-3 calls all night).

I’m sure this varies a lot. In my class, 50% did some moonlighting at some point. I did the most. I started as soon as I could PGY-2. There weren’t many options for PGY-2, so on weekends I could drive 4 hours for a weekend gig. I never earned less than $100/hour. By PGY-4, there were many options.

Our main moonlighting options weren't worth the pain so I only did one or two shifts. I don't feel that I was ill prepared by not doing more moonlighting.

Moonlighting is really, as others have mentioned, region and program specific. About half of my colleagues from med school that went on to psych took up moonlighting. Rates were anywhere from $1,000 for internal moonlighting on the weekends and $125 for light overnight call to $125/hr for attending-level coverage in external systems. Everyone I know ended up in the Northeast.

150 per hour. Holidays were 225 per hour
