So I am a minority.

I'm working on my pre-med classes now, aiming to have my bachelors done by the end of the Spring 2011 term ( about 8 months left in classes ).

I might end up with a 3.25 area SGPA, probably something close for my overall GPA as well.

Not the best scores in the book, but anything above a 3.0 ill be personally happy with as Im working, doing my internship and research projects as well.

So my moral dilemma comes into play when I start applying for medical schools. Realistically speaking ill have more chances at DO schools, but thats not the point.

Do I put into my applications / resume that I am a minority?

I really hate the race card, ive grown up around white people my entire life and other then a few *****s I think I've been treated very fairly. I am finding myself feeling "guilty" about the prospect of getting admitted into a medical school because of my skin color and not my work ethic.

However I am also very driven to get into medical school... so I come looking for advice!

If this has been brought up before ( probably has ) sorry, I didnt see it off hand

just put down your real race-- thats the moral thing to do

If you think you'll make a good doctor, put down your race.

You are under no obligation to list your race on your application. Doing so, however, does help when analysis of admissions by racial group are tallied up.

If you get any props on the basis of race it will not be for the color of your skin (ask any South Asian Indian who is darker than most African Americans) but for the life experiences you've had a member of an ethnic minority and the credibility you have when you serve as a physician to patients who feel that you can identify with them and where they are coming from culturally.

If you have an advantage take it.

Although I don't agree with race-based admissions, don't be a martyr. Use the system to your advantage.

It's not exactly something I'm a fan of either, but one person refusing to use it to their advantage on the basis of pride or dignity isn't exactly going to change anything.

I am 100% against race-based admissions, scholarships, etc....but I guess you have to do anything you can to make yourself competitive. I respect the fact that you are even considering not putting it.

do it, its a competition, white people put you down for years, time to get something in return.

lol, as someone mentioned you have nothing to gain from NOT doing so and EVERYTHING to lose by not doing it (your GPA is pretty mediocre). If you lose sleep over this someone else will be sleeping VERY soundly by taking your spot. But  do whatever you want, it's your future.

i would put down that i was a pubic hair from britney spears' chest if that would help make up for a 3.0-3.25 gpa.

I would trade a 20 years of oppression for one day being able to attend medical school. What do you think? Everyone has to pay his dues to get in. White people need to work their asses off to get a 35 MCAT and 3.7GPA. Asians need abandon all social life to cure at least one disease during undergrad and get a 40 MCAT while being slashed by their parents. URMs need to be shot a couple of times.

OP don't feel guilty you didn't make URM status, ADCOMs did.

Wow, just wow ...

you forgot to talk about the mexicans ... not so much shot but getting deported or living in arizona

Exactly what I was thinking

Only 40% of URMs get in. Also about 7% of Medstudents each year are ORMs with MCATs of 26 and below.

And wouldn't being shot be worse than all that you described?

Also if you are a ORM and get a 26 you still have a good shot of attending Medschool via D.O

I wouldn't get shot to attend DO though 😛. But that is my personal ignorant opinion because I'm sure DO isn't that bad if I had done my research on the matter.

I'm a minority too, I'm not 100% if I'll qualify as URM or not, because I hear it varies by school and other factors affect it. I put down my ethnicity and race, if that helps then so be it. Being a minority sure as hell hasn't helped in any other area of my life so far so whatevs. I'm not sure if it should or not, but like I said whatevs.

Use it to your advantage. Do you think some kid with a mediocre GPA whose daddy paid for a medical school building worried about the school knowing his last name because he didn't want them to do him any "favors"? I know that isn't the same, but my point is, if you have anything you can use to your advantage, you should do so, because everyone else will be doing the same.

Just do it. In med school you'll be held to the same standard as everyone else, so if you think you've got the intelligence and drive to be successful, go for it.

Why wouldn't you put your race down? It is simply being honest. If it provides you with an advantage, why not use that advantage?
