ya the what are my chances thread is dead so i was wondering if people can give me some help on my schools. what do i take out what should i add?

I am a student at Emory University and Alabama resident
3.38 overall gpa
3.29 BCMP
33N MCAT - 10 phys, 11 verbal, 12 bio

I retook a class that i did terribly in my sophomore year and without that i'd have a 3.5. Obviously my gpa is low but I have a strong upward trend with A's in both semesters of Orgo my junior year. Also i excpect strong letters of rec as well. I have worked in a lab for one summer and shadowed multiple physicians ( over 200 hours). Also I have volunteered in physical therapy rehabilitation center. The top two are "dream" schools so no i don't expect to get in, or hell, not really expecting getting past secondaries. I'm hoping the Alabama residency will help on the alabama schools as it is known to help, just worried my gpa is too low. What are your opinions?

What makes you different from every other neurotic pre-med out there? Answer that question and I think you stand a chance (even with that GPA). However, fumble it up and you'll be trying again next year. Every thing really comes down to that single question.

Do you have non-medical EC's?

ya i have a couple. I am a part of an traditional indian dance team (bhangra) that practices 3 to 4 times a week so its pretty time consuming not to mention the weekends gone for competitions. also i play almost every IM sport if that means anything and am a youth soccer referee as well.

I would still add a few "easier" schools to get into, if there is such a thing. Remember that there are a lot of qualified applicants for every spot. You have a decent MCAT (ha, I had the same, but 11, 11, 11N), but with your GPA it would be beneficial to apply to a few more.

I also dance (garba team) , and I understand the pain and time involved in it. I wish you the best of luck. I feel like Im going to be in that position when I apply haha

gtown, gw, tufts, and bu are very expensive in terms of tuition, and receive a ton of applications. IMHO, you should REALLY want to go to these schools if you apply considering the amount of debt and very low chance of selection.

Consider Wake Forest, VCU, University of Toledo, Albany Medical College, USC, Cincinnati, UMDNJ-NJMS, RFU, Temple, Drexel, MCW, and EVMS. These schools are your best bets. I would apply to these schools, the Alabama schools, Emory, Tulane, and a couple of dream schools to bring the total to 16-20 schools. Good luck!

thanks for the wish and ya hopefully i can get in somewhere this year and maybe, just maybe it will also be somewhere that I wouldnt mind spending the next four years of my life. what school do u dance for man?

Rutgers haha.

Do you have some sort of connection to USC (Southern Cal) or California? If not, don't bother applying. It's not a screened secondary but with those stats it's going to be very difficult to get in without some connection to the school or at least the area.

I'd add like Rosalind Franklin, Albany, Jefferson, EVMS, Rush, Loyola, VCU, maybe some other state schools in the NE, and perhaps drop some of the mid/high ranked schools, but apply to 30+ schools with those stats.

I would add more lower tier schools. Your GPA is below average for any medical school, and your MCAT is just slightly above average.

Better safe then sorry.

I had almost identical stats (MCAT and overall GPA, but I did a 2 year post-bacc) and applied broadly to many of the schools mentioned here for a total of 15 schools.

In retrospect, I felt like I wasted all my money applying to out of state schools as I was rejected by every one of them. I did get two interviews inside of my own state of Florida, and an ultimate acceptance to one.

I'd suggest that you ensure that your "total application package" is well rounded (Letters of Reference, ECs, Essays), and prepare for a possible reapplication in the future. Make sure that you apply to all of your state schools as they are your best bet! Keep working at it, you have the stats to get in but it can be a difficult road. :luck:

definitely more broadly

Definitely apply to UAB and USA. I've had friends get into both with lower GPAs, and a little above average MCAT... what made them stood were their PS, ECs, and they had excellent recommendations. Just the same ol advice everyone is giving, but never give up!

Doesn't UAB have like a 50% instate acceptance rate?

42 percent to be exact but whats the difference?

actually 8 percent would be close to 36 more instate acceptances

Doesn't UAB have like a 50% instate acceptance rate?

yeah, but 30-40% reapplied to UAB >1 year
It is not uncommon for them to ask state applicants to try again the next year.

But unless you are a freak in your interview (and many are), a 33 mcat will get you into uab as long as all your other EC & academic ducks are in a row.
