So far I have a letter from:
- science professor
- peer (from a fellow student volunteer)
- thesis advisor
- research advisor / md shadowed

I emailed a non-science professor that I thought I had a really good rapport with and she has not responded. I know she's busy and I know she could decline to write the letter--I don't know why and I wouldn't have approached her if I had imagined she'd say no but, hey, that's her prerogative--I just wish she would respond. I also know that I sound impatient, but I was talking to someone else today who mentioned that she had just immediately responded to an email via her blackberry. And I'm like why ignore someone? I'd politely tell them no and why not. If she does have a reason for declining, I probably need to hear what it is.

Sigh. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Definitely. I asked for a letter last year February. She interviewed me and everything. Still waiting. This prof in particular I've found out has a habit of doing this. In your case, I would just send another email if its been more than 2 weeks, saying I'm not sure if you received my last email... Or just go see her in person.

Man, that's terrible. I really think she should tell you what she felt your shortcomings were, especially if she is interviewing you! I have heard of professors declining, but they usually say why...

I agree with lotrmemp.

While it's possible that she's ignoring you, send her another e-mail or see her in person.

It's possible that she saw the e-mail, thought about her response, and set it aside for later and completely forgot about it. It's happened to all of us.

I wouldn't take this too personally. If you continue getting ignored, however, just take the hint and move on.
