I stole this from a Reader's Digest:

We were helping a customer when the store's optometrist walked by and smiled at another coworker, of course we all had to stop whate we were doing to tease her about the budding romance. But she responded with "can you imagine what it would be like to make out with an optometrist, It would always be, 'is this better or is this'"?

What's the difference between and ophthalmologist and an optometrist?

About $300,000 per year

Also:

4 years medical school that are more intense (esp. 3rd year) and chock full of information that you don't need to treat eyes and are just going to forget anyway.

A residency chock full of 80 hour weeks and the occassional 30+ hour shift and full of scut work.

Finally finishing your training 4 years later than people who went to optometry school.

Median OMD salary: $200,000. So unless the typical OD is losing $100,000 a year, reconsider, your numbers are a bit off. The difference is closer to $100,000. Maybe you should reconsider letting your cynicism affect your math 😉

Well put Tom. When you consider factors such as entering the workforce four years earlier, income increasing per year for several years, and the typically lower student loan debt level, I would bet the the difference is even smaller.
