this question is very tricky and of course you may think the ans is an obvious one but of course its not. can anyone explain how to do this one?

At a convention of dentists, 1000 dentists are from the west coast. one hundred are women;60 of the women are not from the west coast. how many male dentists are from the west coast?

a. 850
b. 800
c. 900
d. 960
e. 940

please explain how to go about this..thanks!!

1000 from West

100 - 60 = 40 women from West

1000 (from west) - 40 (women from west) = 960 men from west

if they are asking how many men are from the west coast why do we care about how many women are from the west or not?

people from W. are either men or women. you know the total # of people from W. and you know how many of those are women. So, number of men from W. = total # of people from W. MINUS # of women from W.

I would go with D as well. The wording of the problem is bad. It states that 1000 dentists are from the west coast, and then says 100 are women. This implies that 100 of the 1000 dentists are women FROM THE WEST COAST. But, the next sentence says that of those 100, only 40 are actually from the west coast. If there are 1000 dentists (male + female) and we know that only 40 of those are women, then....

1000 - 40 = 960.

you are very right about the wording being bad.
but since they are asking about the number of "men" dentists only, don't you think having 100 women eliminates the question afterwards??

now your question doesn't make sense. They're asking about only men. And they give you total number of west coasters in a room full of maybe a billion people. 1000 west coast. 40 are women from west coast. So now that leaves 960 men from west coast.

Do you guys realize that the question ask "how many male dentists are from the west coast?" and seein ghow it says that there are 100 females, shouldn't the answer just be 1000-100 = 900. cause 960 would be all the dentists( male + female ).

Nope. 1000 dentists out of many more attending the convention are from the west coast (not total). Then it says that there are 100 females total, 40 are from the west coast, 60 are not. So how many males at the convention are from the west coast?

1000 (male + female west coasters) - 40 (female west coasters) = 960 (male west coasters)

Wording is tricky, but you should define each number and give it a "unit".

I think you're interpreting the question as of the 1000 west coasters 100 are female...which is not true. There are 100 females out of the total number of people at the convention....which they don't give. So the answer is 960 as explained.
