So, everyone always tells me that my scores are competitive for a particular specialty (for me EM) if I don't care what city I go to. In general, what locations are less competitive? Does this mean poor areas of big cities or small towns? Or is this just too complicated to have a clear answer?

EM is different in terms of what locations are more competitive. Generally top academic programs in desirable locations are still going to be in demand (Boston, LA, NYC, SF) but a lot of inner city programs are attractive because they have better training. In general, the Midwest and South are less competitive than the costs, though.
