Hey all,

Not long ago, I had a "classic video games" thread on here. It was good fun for all.

I'm here to ask for help from my fellow nerds/gamers. I have this crazy idea, and I need some "young blood" to help me with the nuances.

I have an old PC CD-ROM game that I love (Its "SimGolf", if you don't have it and you like golf, I suggest you spend the 5.99 on amazon.com).

I have an ASUS Transformer TF700t tablet. Android OS.

How do I get to play my old CD-ROM game on my new Android tablet ? In theory, I should be able to make an image of the CD-ROM and get those files onto my android, so I can play SimGolf wherever I want on my effing sweet tablet.

All input welcome, even if you're just going to troll me, that's fine. I'm not a total old-man, but I'm also been out of the insider-gaming scene since... say... 2002.

You would need an emulator for Windows for Android, and then run the game (image) in that environment. I think there are such things out there, I just haven't played with them.
Or find the game as a java script online somewhere, and play it on a browser.

Based on the level of this post you should stick to the original Pong, old man.

Strong work. 👍

But seriously; think about it - I transfer files between my laptop and tablet all the time. In theory its just "get all the files from the CD-ROM onto the tablet, and play it 'locally' there."

Plus, the game is so great. Really is.

I don't think it would work as well as you think. Consider the interface. I'm very familiar with the game, and it doesn't really seem conducive to a touch screen. I would hate for you to figure out how to get it running on your tablet, only to find that it's un-playable because you can't use a touch screen to get it to do what you want...

This did actually occur to me. I should tell you that I have a keyboard with "touchpad" (as you would normally see on a laptop) that clicks into the tablet, thus making it a tiny laptop with full keyboard.

The keyboard has an internal battery too, which is effing sweet, as when the tablet is 'clicked in', it runs off the keyboard battery and not its own, thus giving you like 3-4x the battery life.

I miss simgolf. I know that dates me, but that's ok.
I also miss my apple IIe

The game is compiled for windows kernel you cant run it in a unix based os like android without an emulator. And emulator will take more resources to run the game, because the tablet will have to do the processing for the game as well virtualizing a windows machine under it, but it might be doable, tablets have decent processing power and that is an old game.
If you can find the game in java that is a the way to go.

FInd a windows emulator, based on wine for android , like winulator . I cant guarentee it will work flawlessly.

consider EA sports tiger woods? It's uh... probably a bit better than a ten year old game.

Have that, too. SimGolf is different because you get to design the course... its not a "Golfing" game, its a sim/management game. Go buy it.

Ten four. I'm more of a halo / call of duty / battlefield kind of guy myself.

You mean those are actually different games !? 🙂

Playing Bioshock Infinite for PC. Best game ive seen and played since Fallout New Vegas. I really only play Team Fortress 2 on PC. Best multiplayer out there and its now free to play!

Good luck on the golf sim. Ive been looking for Happyeed for the mac (played in college computer labs back in 1996!) but no luck.

Now, if some genius would make FFVII for the iphone/pad theyd be bankin.

Few games are worth emulating on a tablet. There's always a plethora of technical hurdles, bugs and frustration. Technically, yes you can emulate SimGolf on your android tab but man...it's just not realistically worth the effort.

I run a few emulated games these days on my Mac. Morrowind (not that old) and Ultima 4 from sheesh...mid 80s? I used to play the hell out of some Autoduel and Ultima 4 on my Apple IIe back in the day.

Lately, I've got Diablo 3, Skyrim, Deus Ex Human Revolution and Guild Wars 2 installed but I keep getting sidetracked. The only one I finished was Diablo 3 and Skyrim. Kick ass games btw. I keep meaning to boot one of them up but find myself playing a few minutes of Trine 2 which I downloaded off a whim on the App Store. Fun game and easy to pick up and put down.

Not at all. Android is a linux variant and your game is for windows. This would be like trying to play and xbox game on a ps3. It doesn't just work. You would need to port the windows game to run in linux or get a windows virtual environment running on the tablet.

You guys need to check out World of Tanks...best part is it's free.

That being said definitely need an emulator to run Windows game on tab. I actually have an infinity myself and rumor has it Asus is creating a dual boot tab out soon (Windows and android). Maybe donate the infinity to a friend or family member and buy the new one would be easiest.

Eh, if it can't run, it can't run. I'm not about to go all nuts and get emulator happy with it.

If you're a baseball guy, I've been playing "9 Innings 2013" on my android tablet. Wow. Easy to understand the play system and... so hard to put down.
