Tulane
Pros
Cons
Morehouse
Pros
I think once financial aid comes out, I'll have a better idea...but right now I'm leaning towards Morehouse because of the scholarship. I have family here, and since I like to cook anyway, I don't think it's absolutely necessary for me to go to Tulane. However, I do feel like I'll be missing out on New Orleans.
I know I would be happy in Atlanta, I just don't like having to rely on a car to have any sort of social life. I feel like in New Orleans if I live near the school, I could just walk over to the bars after a test or something.
When it comes to social life in Atlanta, we've got everything that New Orleans has besides a huge jazz scene and a crazy food scene (although we do have the Jazz Music Festival and Ponce City Market), and I know people here in Atlanta outside of medicine. I think it's good to have friends outside of medicine to keep somewhat of a balanced perspective on life. And I still feel like I have more of Atlanta to explore...
But at Morehouse, I'd always be worrying about my GPA or the curve because scholarship money is on the line.
I don't mind leaving my family, in fact I kind of want to leave. I have been living with them for the past couple of years, I'm so ready to move out!
The biggest draw to Tulane for me is living in New Orleans, and learning more about the Goldring Culinary Institute. Oh, and the students at New Orelans seemed very happy to be there, although the students I met at Morehouse also seemed happy to be there!
I feel like the patient populations between New Orleans and Atlanta are fairly similar (a lot of homeless, a lot of underserved ethnic minorities), and both Morehouse and Tulane have a mission focus on those groups.
Oh, also, I dislike the cold very much, and Atlanta has been freezing these past few months!
Any advice is appreciated 🙂
Pros
- Culinary Medicine Electives and Teaching Kitchen sound very fun and unique! I enjoy cooking to de-stress
- Relatively walkable city; I wouldn't have to rely on my car to have a social life or do other activities of daily living (grocery shopping, going to parks, etc.). Might even be able to go car-free during pre-clinicals. Not having to rely on a car is important to me
- Vacation during Mardi Gras!
- Warmer weather
- Potential mentorship opportunities in my field of interest (forensic psychiatry)
- Visited New Orleans twice, and I really like how walkable it is. I think I would be very happy here, even if I left my family in GA
- P/F grading, anyone know if it's curved though?
Cons
- Price
- Relocation is annoying
- Not close to any family
Morehouse
Pros
- Don't have to do a huge relocation because I live in metro-Atlanta
- Considerable Scholarship, but I have to maintain a GPA (stressful?)
- Family is in GA, they are my rock
- Everyone says Grady Clinical rotations are top notch
- Potential mentorship opportunities in forensic psych via Emory?
- Music and food scene in Atlanta dope
- Don't have to travel for Step 2 testing
- TRAFFIC, It's my biggest gripe about Atlanta.
- Overall Atlanta does not appeal to me much as a New Orleans, but it might just be ennui
- Not Pass/Fail, maintaining a certain GPA to keep my scholarship could be mad stressful
