I thought that it was about time for someone to start a thread about Morehouse, a place for those who are still waiting on interviews, acceptances to discuss or to just share information about a really great school.

Here is my first question:
What changes did they make to the curriculum this year?

For those of you who have already interviewed, what was your take on the school as a whole?

I'm not applying this year but I am glad someone started a thread about Morehouse. I know I am def applying here next year! How is the process going for you HisPurposeOnCall?

I have been complete at Morehouse for about a month and now it is time to play the waiting game. I would choose Morehouse over any of the other GA schools because of the academic environment. Lets just hope I get a chance to let them know that. 🙂

I don't have my notes on specific schools with me because i'm at work, so i don't remember the specific curriculum changes but i interviewed here and really liked it. I'm hoping to hear soon! The student body seemed nice and close-nit, the professors seemed great. I also really like the uniform tablet-laptops that morehouse and howard both do, with all your histo slides and everything all in there. I really think that's a great system more schools should adopt. I like the environment at the HBCUs better than anywhere else; they seem so family-like. I was really impressed wtih last year's 100% 1st time pass rate on the step 1- a school that can take below average test takers (they have a lower than average MCAT) and make them score like that and all pass the step ones really impresses me... any school can take great test takers and make them score well on a test, but this really shows that Morehouse faculty can teach.

I interviewed there back in October and i fell in love with the school. I believe many poeple overlook the school because they believe its only for minorities or because it is not rank as high as other schools. However, during my interview I noticed that everyone there was willing to help and support each other...a great family atmosphere. They also had a first time 100% pass rate on thier boards and the other schools in GA did not. It is definitely one of my first choices for med school. Its a palce I would want to spend my next 4 years...So now I am waiting and praying I get an acceptance there in the next couple of weeks.

I'll be interviewing on November 30th, and am looking forward to it. If anyone else is going to be there, let me know!

On a separate note, it's sad to hear about Grady. I'm not from GA, but that one resource that the indigent of the greater Atlanta area seem to be in sore need of retaining. I hope they can work through their financial difficulties.

I really like Morehouse too. Have any of you been accepted yet?

we were told at our interview (oct 5th) that we could call after thanksgiving to get a better indication of when decisions would be available. I haven't called yet because things have been so hectic this week, but when/if i do i'll let you guys know

Does anyone know when Morehouse are going to send out their first batch of acceptance letters?

I believe letters are supposed to go out on Dec. 7th but I'm not sure. You can always call up the admissions office and ask.

I also interviewed at Morehouse and liked it over there. :clap:I just wish it wasn't so far from home (i'm in Maryland) 🙁 Just like others have said, it says alot when a school can have a 100% pass rate, higher than most other schools, despite taking in a lot of students below the supposed golden number stats. This says alot about the type of wonderful instruction that the students are receiving.
The only thing that saddens me is the possibility of Grady closing. Being that this is the main location for rotations and residency for morehouse students, I'm not sure how the clinical education may suffer if Grady does close. I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that. Does anyone know how likely it is that this will happen?

As for when they are sending out letters, I spoke to someone in admissions yesterday and they said that they are sending them out the second week of December. Good luck to everyone!!!

Grady's board just voted to turn the hospital over/into a non-profit organization/hospital so I believe they will be getting the funds they need to keep the doors open, pay physicians and the medical schools, and upgrades for the hospital. So it looks like the hospital will be just fine.

Great!!! I've heard so many positive things about peoples experiences at Grady.....I guess this will leave me with more to think about if I actually get accepted

hey y'all... so i have been on hold rescreen at morehouse since 9/21... wtf?! i have called twice and neither time have i been able to glean any information from the admissions people.

anyone in this same boat, or am i just hated?

I have been on hold since mid november, glad I'm not alone. Wish I knew how many people are put in hold status and what chances are as I really love Morehouse!

I am on hold also. At first I thought it was a bad thing, but I feel like I still have a chance. I am pretty excited to not be rejected though! 😀 That pass rate is fabulous!

How do you find out if you are on hold?
Also, how do they invite you for an interview- phone, email, or mail?

anyone have any real (i.e. substantiated) stats or whatnot as to the probability of getting an interview from hold status? come on, we're all nerds here, so someone has to have done a linear regression, with chi squared values, of something like this... or maybe even a retrospective analysis of insanity vs. interview vs. rejection rates...

PS - it's snowing here in philly and i love snow, so i get silly and poke fun at we nerds :laugh::laugh:

i'm sorry that i don't have any info on this, but i might call morehouse next week to ask when i can expect a decision, and i'll ask about that for you if i do call.
I am not so excited about the snow here in philly, as i have a half-hour long walk home in the dark cold from work, and could certainly do without those huge snowflakes in my face. also, i still don't have a scraper for my car, and was considering the possibility of driving to target later.

Does anyone know what it means when they put you on hold-rescreen? I was glad that someone asked about the possibility of getting an interview from the hold status b/c I wanted to know also. Thanks

I'm on hold as well. I received an e-mail telling me so.

Does the re-screening process ever work out to favor those on hold??

I was sent an email stating that I am in a "Hold Rescreen" status. Not sure about the method of interview invites.

I have a friend who got a hold letter back in Sept. It was dated a week or so before he got it, then he called the school to ask about it, three days later, he got an interview email saying that he would get a snail mail packet. SO they email first, with interview time and date (I guess so people can start looking for flights if necessary). Then the snail mail official letter comes. (I am responding to the last few messages)

you think CALLING HELPED? or was it a coincidence (your friend was going to get the interview at that time anyway)?

I called today..

"May I check on the status of my application please?"
"What's your name?"
"Love Beatles?"
"Love?"
"Hold on.... (2 min later)... your status hasn't changed."

I thought it was funny since he didn't even bother asking for my AMCAS ID. I'm not even sure if he caught on to my full name or if he actually checked! interesting..

i'll wait 3 days and let you know if calling helped (haha)

He did not call and talk to the assistant, etc. He called and talked to the admissions director to discuss why he was on hold, I think he called to discuss or called to set up the meeting to discuss why he was on hold. After the chat (within a week was my understanding, he got the email) Sorry for being vague before. Oh, and in my opinion, I think letting the school know that you are interested does help, whether that is what got my friend off hold list, he doesnt know.

Grady's going to be fine. There's no way the other hospitals in Atlanta could possibly take in all of their patients, let alone the ER visits, trauma, uninsured/underinsured, etc.

Thanks hurtsmystomach, that's good information. When I called the admissions office last week, I was told that updating my file wasn't necessary b/c my file is with the committee. I want to send a LOI but I don't really know where to start with it.

About sending the LOI, I suggest making an appointment with Dr. Roaf and asking why is my application on hold, what can I do to improve it, etc. Tell him face to face how interested you are. He told a family member of mine that students sometimes make a special trip or wait to see him just to meet him, and he meant that it was good that they did this.

I called again today to speak with Dr. Roaf (who was busy with interviews).

The advisor I spoke with told me that students are not put on hold for any particular reason (low GPA, lack of ECs, etc.), instead, students are put on hold so that they can give everyone a "fair shot". He said that they have over 3000 files and that this is the only way for them to assess qualified individuals.

BUT..it's already mid-December... who knows what's going on...

Thanks for that information Blade28! Did you attend Morehouse? If you did, could you share some of your experiences with us and let us know how you felt MSM prepared you for residency? Thanks in advance!

I just called Admissions and they said letters were sent out on Wednesday, so it really is any time from now.....I'm so nervous......

No, sorry, I didn't go there for med school - I just happen to rotate at Grady quite often during my residency. I've worked with some of the Morehouse residents, and TWO med students during away rotations, but that's about it.

So the mail where i live is slower than slow...it usually takes me an extra four days or so to recieve things. Which means it's going to be a long week, with waiting for this letter, a brown rejection at the end of the week, not hearing from cornell when they start letting people in, getting my lousy biochem semester grade, and a long drive to my parents house to announce the news and "Celebrate". Hopefully Morehouse will be one thing worth celebrating after this crazy week.

Congrats i'm sooooo happy for you!!
I'm like 99% sure i'm going to get rejected by Brown b/c my interviews did NOT go well. like at all. Cornell i'm expecting a waitlist in march? They hand out a couple of acceptances to like their top top choices in december, and i know that i won't be getting one of these, but it won't stop me from being excessively depressed when other people do and i don't, because i'm obsessed with it. Plus it comes by email, so it'll be one of those instant gratification thigns.

I am really excited to hear from morehouse this week. I loved the school. I am just nervous about being that far from home; just being in philly has been really hard for me this year, although i know i'd have a lot more opportunity to meet people/make friends in med school, and i already have a few friends in atlanta. DancinRN are you leaning towards morehouse? I PMd you liek 15 min ago to see if this was as tough a choice for you.

hiya... i just responded to your PM...hahahah...anyway...u never know about brown... I had one really horrible interview experience as well ..we had two of them and my first one was 10 am...it was before everything else..and i seriously almost left..the guy was soo not nice to me... I am a pretty strong person but i literally could have cried right there...and it figured,,,well obviously this guy isn't going to rec me...it was that bad...and i rambled because i was soo taken aback by it and surprised...but i was accepted the second day they handed out acceptances...when i look back on it i think he wanted to see how i handled myself under pressure...because i talked so much about being able to do that in my personal statement..so maybe brown went better than you think... but if not...you don't need them anyway🙂

thanks for your really sweet words..but i have a feeling that morehouse will go well for you...

I got in, too! 🙂 Morehouse totally blew me away when I went on my interview.

Congrats everyone! and good luck to those still waiting!

It is pretty awesome and exciting to see you guys getting accepted. Now I just pray that I get an interview with them. I am really starting to get nervous but I'm hanging in there! Congrats to everyone that got in. 👍

By the way, is it OK to email Dr. Roaf? Has anyone ever had any negative feedback for emailing him?

Dr. Roaf is really nice and accessible, i don't think you'd have any negative reprocussions at all. he'd probably be happy to see you're interest in the school. good luck!

Thanks for the feedback and congrats to you on the acceptances aaj117! Do you know his email off hand?

Thank you very much! I am so nervous b/c I don't want to blow it and I want to express my interest very clearly.
Is emailing a LOI just as good as sending one by mail? Mail takes so long these days.
