Every Mormon that I have ever met in my entire life is a dentist, a dental student, or pre-dent. I don?t understand why so many of them go into dentistry.

Financial stability needed for multiple families, maybe?

Sorry, is just I think your post is hilarious. Anyway, I don't know any mormons, so isn't my case. 🙂

Mormon culture places a lot of emphasis on education so you are likely to find a large number of Mormons in just about any higher educational program - from law to medical to PhD programs.

(BYU did an interesting study a few years ago showing that higher education actually showed a positive correlation with religious activity in the Mormon faith. This is in contrast to a strong negative correlation between religious activity and education in the rest of the population. Just thought that was interesting.)

Anyhow, I think you both are pretty much right about the popularity of dentistry with Mormons. While Mormons haven't practiced polygamy for over a century, they do tend to have large families, and dentistry provides sufficient income and free time to be a good parent. Also, the Mormon church doesn't have paid clergy so it's important to a lot of Mormons that they have time to spend doing church work. 🙂

I have over 10 classmates that are Mormons. BYU Predental program is amazing from what I've heard.

This is about as on-the-money as it gets. I'm LDS but I have an MD after my name. I went to medical school with a number of "Mormons" (and it definitely was NOT in Utah). I currently live near a dental school which has a sizable number of LDS students. Our church places a heavy emphasis on higher education that's for sure.

couldnt help but chuckle, i suppose in the UK,our equivalent to the mormons are south east asians who dominate most english dental schools.

Me inc. one 😉

VCU has our share of Mormons and I am good friends will many of them. (My wife is Mormon but I am not so I have an IN and an OUT)
I believe that most of the reasons stated above are true. The big one being family time and good money(10% is alot!).

Almost all of the Mormons that I know are great people who go out of their way to help anyone, HOWEVER, they are MEAN on the basketball court! Blood Drawing Fouls!!!

Here is an interesting comment a friend of mine said, "If you are a Mormon dentist get ready to be the Bishiop." So all you Zoobie pre-dents and MoeMoe Dental students, start preparing now!
