I recently stumbled upon a book that I found really interesting.

Dr. Schein, whose website is even more interesting, seems to have run the gamut of surgical experience, from South Africa to the Bronx to the rural midwest. He also appears to have about 300 journal publications.

I've read about half of the above-mentioned book, which is somewhat limited by outdated recommendations, but still contains excellent clinical and operative pearls. I also read some excerpts from his memoirs, and I'm surprised at how open he is, and sympathized with his negative experience operating in rural Iowa.

One of the more interesting aspects of his storytelling is his abrasive, sometimes-wrong-never-in-doubt approach to medicine, which appeared to be his tragic flaw in small-town Iowa.

I was curious if anyone here had any personal experience with him, or if anyone else is familiar with his work. He just seems like a unique surgical personality that would make a good teacher in the OR.....

One of my gen surgery co-residents always raved about the common sense book. I could never get my hands on it, I think it was pretty expensive.

Great website- just checked it out. Read the chapter called "The Lynching" describes his experience with the medical exec committee AND puts their pictures in!!! I am going to have to read the rest now....

I agree, I think a guy like this could be VERY interesting to work with as a resident. they tend to be the ones you can learn the most from

Yeah, it's an interesting read. "The Lynching" is pretty wacked. The photos at the end of the chapter are real, but the names are not. However, after about 2 minutes of googling, I found the Keokuk Area Hospital site, and the probable identities of the story's players are easily established.

For example, the orthopaedist in the account "Dr. Brown" is probably Kirk Green D.O., and the anesthesiologist "Dr. K" is probably J. Kantamneni MD.

Entertaining stuff.

That site makes a great reading. I really enjoyed going through it.
