4. What is your weaknesses?

I have a classmate who is a whiz at interviewing. I am not - I am as good at interviewing as I was at "game" with girls when I was single. Example - at one residency interview last year I was actually stupid enough to say "You know, one night of over night call is one night too many". Geez how stupid am I.

Anyway, my classmate was asked question #4 and he told me he responded : "My big weakness is I like to stay up late working"

Its all BS. He is lazy. And he knows it. But he and I have discussed a few times that the residency process is like the dating process - if you really care, you will lie. Which is true of the programs too - they are like the girls in the dating situation : who lie lie lie - mascara (eyelashes aren't really that lush), high heels (they aren't really that tall), padded bra (well you know), lipstick (their lips aren't really that luscious), - lies...all lies.

Getting into residency is like dating - both ways, programs and candidates. if you really care, you will lie

I hear ya, embarrassingly I am usually too simple of a person to lie, and too simple to assume people are lying to me. It causes me alot of grief sometimes

Probably better not to outright lie.
You want to present yourself in the best possible light, as does the program.
But yes, sometimes a little creativity with the truth is necessary...

I think that the programs who like their residents to phony smile will like the applicants who phony smile; the programs who like genuine, and sometimes shy or awkward people, will hire those who are genuine and maybe sometimes awkward.

I tend to freeze up when I feel uncomfortable and am not good at the insincere stuff. I am sincere, and I think that comes through most of the time. If a program doesn't like me for who I am then I guess that's ok. I plan to use my instincts when I go on interviews and really get a feel for whether I feel comfortable or not.

I think it should be that way in dating, too. 🙂
