Thought I'd start up this little discussion. Many people talk about the fact that GP's can do anything a specialist can do if they can perform to the same level, but I'd like to get some feedback on what people think are the most common referrals. From what I have seen, molar RCT is commonly sent out, along w/ perio surgeries..like gingival grafts and whatnot..and of course the ever popular complex 3rd molar extractions. Any other examples people would like to add? I'm sure there are many. Yea i'm bored so lets have at it....

ortho? --the obvious choice. Pedo for bebe's kids.

Oral cancer, don't know if you consider that common lol....
Implants also are commonly referred in some dental practices

The most common referrals I make are for weird path things that I need the OS to look at and difficult impactions. Molar endo - especially difficult second molars get sent out. And I refer quite a few people just because they are being a pain in the butt and I don't want to deal with their crap. 😀

My practice would be as follows:

1) Ortho and by a HUGE amount (I refer out 100% of my ortho potential cases)

2) Oral surgery procedures (I'll refer out roughly 1/2 of my cases)

3) Endo (I'll refer out maybe 10% of my cases)

4) Pedo (once again maybe 10% of my cases)

Obviously these numbers will vary SIGNIFICANTLY based on both dentists comfort level with procedures and often geographic area too( many times a rural dentist will do alot more than a dentist in a suburban/urban location just simply based on the proximity to specialists)
