Oh my God.

If Urology is as competitive as you guys are saying, then my chances as an IMG are pretty much zero.

I was always under the impression that as regards surgical subspeciality residencies:

1) Ophthalmology
2) Orthopedics
3) ENT
4) Urology

But if Urology is on top of that list, then ****.

plz someone say it's not.

Ortho, Uro and ENT are definitely more competitive than optho at this point. This was probably not the case 5-10 years ago (optho had better reimbursements then, go figure 🙂 ). I think it's hair-splitting to rank them out-- suffice to say, ENT/Uro/ortho are probably next in competitiveness after derm/rad onc/plastics.

I put letters behind numbers when specialties are similar in competitiveness. I listed 4a through 4e randomly.

But to answer your question, Urology is balls hard to match into.

These threads always manage to piss someone off, but they're kind of fun.

My 2 cents:

1. Plastics

2a. Derm
2b. Rad Onc

3. Ortho

4a. Urology
4b. ENT
4c. Ophtho
4d. Radiology
4e. Neurosurgery

5a. EM
5b. Anesthesiology
5c. General Surgery

6a. PM&R
6b. OBGYN

7a. Neurology
7b. Pathology

8a. IM
8b. Psych
8c. FM
8d. Pediatrics

This is exactly how my school advisor had the rankings in his power point presentation - I am pretty sure it was based on applicants to # of positions. well done! (unless you are at my school, and in which case a hearty "boo!" for copying it!)

Hard balls?

Well, I guess you'd better be comfortable with scrotal and testicular issues as well in urology. It's not all pee pee, after all.

I always thought it unfair that recto-vaginal fistulas are the headache of the urogynecologist. I mean, the problem IS half GI, after all. That's like leaving a big mess in your yard that seeps over into the neighbor's property then making THEM clean it up!

I'm 99.9% sure I didn't go to your school, so kudos for me. :hardy:
