For those of you who have used Qbank, are currently using Qbank, or really anyone else with some good ideas - what is the most efficient method when using Qbank to both learn new concepts and reinforce concepts you already know? I am just beginning Qbank and here is my plan:

-Spend about a day (or less if needed) reviewing each subject and then do a 50 q block in tutor mode covering only that subject at the end of the day.

-After going through all major organ systems (cardio, resp, renal, GI, neuro, etc) as well as all other subjects (biochem, micro, immuno, etc) in this manner, then start doing q's in random blocks of 50 using timed mode.

-Continue doing blocks of 50 random q's in timed mode while flagging q's that I feel cover important concepts to review at a later time.

Are there other strategies that others have found to be extremely helpful? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

the best way to use any question bank is to do 50 blocks of RANDOM questionsin in TIMED fashion. This way you learn new info and reinforce stuff that you already know, at the same time. The real test is random. More importantly, the best indicator of your level of mastery of a topic is how you answer questions after you have gone over 3-4 other topics, not right after you have spent 1-2 days focusing on that one topic.

I'm not fan of tutor mode. It doesn't simulate the real test environment, which is timed, and being able to pace yourself is very important. Someone's performance might also be influenced by how many of the first 25 questions they get correct i.e. if you have a rough start, you are more likely to be nervous and second doubt yourself for every question in the remainder of the test. I also think that you are more likely to miss important pearls in the model answers if you are in tutor mode (because I know that I would be ancy to get on to the next question).

Just my thoughts

I used Q-Bank in this manner: I used the Tutor RANDOM mode and did 50 questions at a time. I reviewed those questions that I missed looking at why I chose the answer that I did. When I had enough missed questions to make a RANDOM test, I used those questions and then used the Timed Mode. If I missed the question a second time, I reviewed that material in one of my review books only and I kept an Excel spreadsheet of the topics that I reviewed.

I was able to get through all of the questions of Q-Bank in about 2 and 1/2 weeks and didn't use anything else other than BRS Pathology and Ganong for Physiology with Pharm Recall Power Review.

Scored quite well on Step I and took it three weeks after my second year courses ended because I had an honorary pathology fellowship.
