So it's currently the summer between MS1 and MS2 and I feel completely unmotivated. I have a research project that I'm kind of working on but all I want to do is...well, nothing. I struggled through MS1 and am definitely happy that I passed all my classes but with MS2 and the Step 1 looming, I feel like I need to find some kind of brand new motivation to get through the upcoming second year. Any advice, words of motivation, encouragement, tips, etc. would be much appreciated!

I'd say what you are feeling is pretty normal. After M1 I felt like I needed weeks if not months lol to wind down from that. You just went through a tough year, adjusting to medical school, changing your study habits etc. It's normal to take some time for yourself where you don't do anything at all. Don't worry about M2 or Step 1, there will be a time to worry about those things but that time isn't now. Just enjoy yourself, read non-med school books, catch up on TV shows/movies etc. go travel, do some of the things you put off this year, and in a few weeks when you're bored of that, you'll be ready again for M2.

I'm in the same boat as you, feel completely the same. I feel like I should study for boards or review the material from last year but I have 0 motivation to.

I think we are just tired from year 1 and I'm sure this is just the beginning....some days I wonder what I got myself into.

Yeah just chill this summer I felt like after 8 weeks of sitting on my ass (I didn't do research or anything other than video games) I was ready to hit the ground running during ms2. Ms2 I thought was one of the better years of med school, at least the first 5-6 months before step 1 studying. Much more interesting material taught by MDs not PhD minutiae.
