What do you all do to motivate yourself to keep plugging through school?

I have been really depressed...really since classes started (this seems to be common around these boards now a days from looking at the other threads)....and am looking for some motivation! We do have a longitudinal clinical program where we spend a day in a clinic, but I find my assigned field to be quite dry/boring (I also dont like outpatient medicine too much, which is all I have been exposed to since starting med school)

In undergrad working with kids at a small inpatient hospital worked wonders for my moral, but my med school pretty much makes you ask permission to do anything clinical at area hospitals and if your grades arent up to par, they dont let you do it (I suppose I could go behind their backs and do it anyways, but its a small town with limited clinical opportnities, so I dont know how exactly I would go about doing that...). The school doesnt seem to understand my dilema:::lack of motivation = bad grades 🙁

Any suggestions? What do you do to motivate yourself to keep on truckin'?😉

I drink and play a lot of video games. This is probably not the answer you're looking for though.

have fun. i like to keep things simple: watch a movie, read a book, chat with old friends, or just take a day off and go shopping (or something). i just started running again and that has really helped too.

just know you're not alone OP! it's easy to isolate yourslef and feel like the only one feeling this way but as you said earlier about seeing many posts pertaining to this area, you're not the only one! dont know about you but it's reassuring to know that what i'm going is "pretty normal" given our circumstances. 🙂

I picture my future self swimming through a bin full of my doctor earnings Scrooge McDuck style.

What do you like to do outside of med school? I like watching tv and/or exercising, which maintain my sanity for studying. As for an academic mental boost, maybe you can begin making your summer plans. There are so many options for preceptorships, research, or just chilling out. I know I felt more energized about school when I started planning for the summer. Don't worry; I'm sure you'll pull through 🙂.

If you love working with kids, volunteer at a local elementary school to do after school stuff, teach, etc. I do some volunteer teaching work at local schools and I really enjoy it. I also like the fact that I'm actually NOT at a hospital because sometimes you need to get away from the whole "medicine machine" for a little while.

THIS is an awesome idea! Thank you sooo much 🙂

i sleep with a twenty dollar bill under my pillow. one day, it'll be a stack of benjamins. but for now, the twenty is enough to remind me why i'm here.

Do-It-Yourself Martini Night with friends!
or drunken karaoke!

Bitching about school seems to make it less daunting (for me at least)

I constantly have to remind myself that medical school is only four years...but you get to be a doctor for thirty or so years (depending on when you want to retire). Not a bad tradeoff.

Motivation, ahhhh, the good times. I forgot what motivation means (except for fear of failure and all the consequences of this). Sorry. Right now I just want to slash my throat with my syllabus, or do the hara kiri on myself with whatever shiny sharp object that I have. 😴
