I am a reapplicant. I have a 30N and a 3.54 BCPM. Extensive research experience with publication. However, during my year off, I was in a really bad motorcycle accident with my friend and was in the hospital for nearly a month. I have just been doing physical therapy and tutoring since I can't walk yet. Will that hurt my chances since most people do something extremely productive during their year off? I had planned to work full-time in the lab or find a job in the medical industry, but that obviously didn't happen. I wrote on my secondary applications that I plan to go back to the lab once I can walk. I applied to a bunch of schools with comparable stats. I am already guaranteed an interview with my state school, but do I have a decent shot at getting other interviews and possibly an acceptance?

I don't think I'm well qualified to give you a full answer. You're in a special category that deserves a well thought out answer. I can't do that.

However, I'll disagree when you state that the year inbetween is spent by most doing something incredible. Well, not really. Sure some would have you believe that you must, but I don't think you have to find a cure or write a novel.

And if you still believe that you must do something incredible, the what you're going through right now is incredible! That experience alone speaks volumes.

send a PM to Megboo for advice, she knows more than me.

Well, we got 500+ looks and nobody else wants to respond.

Somebody? Anybody?

Not that many people do something "extremely productive" during their year off. Lots of people get jobs (not necessarily in a science or health field either) just to earn money and start paying off undergrad debts.

Not being able to work in a lab while you're still recovering should not affect your admissions chances. Good luck and get well soon. 🙂

Much in this process depends on packaging, or "selling yourself." Sure, you need a certain level of achievement to begin with, but we've all seen some variation in acceptances, even to the same school, which some people think of as "random." I'd ask myself how I could relate this year's experience to what I've already said about myself in my personal statement/secondaries. Many schools are influenced by "the story," especially when it's cohesive and convincing. Without being too maudlin, make this work for you. Good luck!
