So, I just got an e-mail form Mt. Sinai asking me to get an LOR from my current PI at NIH to further assess my research potential (b/c apparently the LORs from my previous 3 years of research aren't sufficient). I didn't have one with my initial app b/c I just started here in September. I know my PI will write one for me, but I don't know how strong it will be given that I'm still pretty new here, and I also wonder if it's worth the effort given how late it is in the interview season. Does anyone know when Sinai's MSTP stops interviewing? I'm really interested in the school, but I don't want to waste my time getting a new LOR just to be rejected in a few weeks. The e-mail stated that my file had already been reviewed by 3 members of the committee, so I guess it's a good sign that they didn't reject me outright... but I just wonder how much this last minute letter can help. If a letter from my PI of 2.5 years didn't convince them of my potential, will a letter from a new boss be of any help? Any opinions welcome. Has anyone else had a problem like this, and did you end up being interviewed? I'm torn b/c I already have an acceptance at a good school, but I also don't want to pass up an opportunity to end up in Manhattan.

I would say take the chance, talk to your current PI about the situation and ask for a letter. I am sure he/she will understand. It doesn't hurt to try, otherwise you may kick yourself later. My interview at Sinai is not till 25th so you will have the whole month to get an interview invitation. Good luck
