I have enquired with them twice on whether it is OK that I have two research mentors (they want three) but I have not gotten a reply. Has anyone else had any success in contacting them? Thanks.

Unless you're accepted, I don't think they care. When you are accepted, I'm sure you can work this out in the two years before you'll have finished lab rotations one and two.

sorry, i should have clarified that i meant that I have two research mentors writing me letters of recommendation, instead of three that they wanted.

good idea dr. z. i get so caught up on emailing i forget about the phone.

i had the same situation. but i called, and after a few phone calls, they were fine with me applying with only 2 research mentors.

What are you supposed to do if you have only worked in one lab for 3 years, thus only have one research professor?

i called them and the lady told me to put the two that I had.

i'm assuming if you had one mentor, to put one.

i have no idea how having less than three will affect the admissions process, but i suspect it depends on how strong the recommendation letter is, the duration of the involvement, and the reputation of the professor.

So, is it better to have one research mentor that you have been with a long time (3 years) and got a couple of publications out of or is it better to have the diversity of research through shorter stints with 3 research mentors?

If I recall correctly last year the three letter rule gace some people a lot of trouble. Some called, were told two letters was fine, and were later asked to provide a third letter from whatever they were currently doing since the committee was on the fence about them and really wanted three letters from everyone.

I had my two letters all ready to go in august but waited until my third letter was ready in the end of september to submit my application. I figured being complete a little later was better than getting a request later for a new letter.

Best of luck to you all. :luck: Let's hope they realize that not every applicant has three different research mentors.

i applied with 2 letters and have an interviews; we'll see if they ask me later for a third letter...

is it okay to get letters from graduate students/postdocs to meet the three letter requirement or is this frowned upon?
