Hi,

I am considering transferring to Mount St. Mary's College (Los Angeles) to complete my BS in Biology. Its close to where I live and I have the possibility of being awarded 50% of the tuition costs + financial aid. I would be crazy not to consider attending for these reasons.

I'm having second thoughts on applying to MSMC, because I cannot find any information on how many MSMC students have gone on to be accepted into a medical school and/or which medical schools accepted a MSMC student.

I need some insight from a Mount St. Mary's student who has been in this predicament. Did you get into medical school? How many other students got accepted? What schools were you and others accepted into? Would you go to MSMC again or do you wish you went to another college?

Please only comment on Mount St. Mary's College, thanks!

Your question is awfully specific, and I feel like you won't get any real responses when the class size of MSMC is smaller than my high school. Would I expect someone from my high school to see my post on here? Probably not.

1) You don't need to go to Stanford to be accepted to medical school.
2) Contact an academic advisor at the school if you have specific questions about the success of their pre-medical students. One student could probably not give you an accurate view.
3) Doing well in your classes and on the MCAT is the best way to be accepted to medical school, regardless of where you went. Yes, school is a part of your application that is considered... but I know plenty of medical students who came from small liberal arts colleges. As far as I can tell, MSMC is a fine school.
4) As you said, you'd be "crazy not to go" because of the scholarship. Consider that. Depending on where you are in the grand scheme of the pre-med business, you may not even end up applying to medical school.

Not a MSMC student or alumnus, but I can chime in here.

I went to a very small liberal arts state school that one of my interviewers looked up on Wikipedia before meeting with me. The window was maximized on his desktop when I walked into his office. Even worse, this was a top tier school and the one I ultimately chose to attend.

Of the 37 pre-medical students in my freshman class, only 2 of us are matriculating into MD programs. The rest either chose another career or are going to DO school. While I wouldn't trade my experience for anything in the world, going to a small school certainly has its drawbacks. I sought out every clinical and extracurricular opportunity independently, research consisted of a single NIH-funded lab, clinical volunteering could only be done at a community hospital 30 minutes away from campus, and my pre-health adviser was largely ill-informed.

Point is, many times smaller schools lack the resources available to students at bigger universities. As long as you're a go-getter and set your mind to doing the best you can, you'll be fine anywhere you go. Getting into medical school will be entirely dependent on how you perform in and out of the classroom, not the school you go to.

So if MSMC is a financially sound choice that you would be happy with, go for it!

Thanks Endure! I have research and clinic experience with a 3.9 GPA. I've been having issues with deciding on where to transfer, because I'm in LA. All of the doctors I have spoken with have advised me to choose wisely if I plan to apply to California med schools. I want to weigh my options as best as I can. Thank you again 🙂
