It's strange because I received the phone call on a Saturday from the dean of admissions at UCI, informing me that I was accepted. But unfortunately, I withdrew my application 2 weeks ago because they told me I was on a waitlist. She told me that she did not receive that information. It was kind of awkward to turn down this nice offer. I was surprised by the phone call. I politely told her that I will matriculate at UCSD. She was nice about it and wished me goodluck with UCSD.

hehe that is funny...

yes there is definitely movement on the waitlist...heard it from a couple of pple 😀

that must have been awkward....on a saturday huh?

are you serious, Cambrian? A phone call on Sat?
I interviewed at UCI pretty recently and it's definitely my first choice. What is your MCAT and GPA? if you don't mind to post them.
thanx

LHP: What other schools did you interview at and why is UCI your top choice?

Hi Scoopy Doo,
I went to UCI as an undergrad and stayed home all the time. I'm from a very poor family. I had to work and support my family. So, money is a really big factor in my choice. It's no doubt that I have to borrow all loan for my medical education. If I go to UCI, I can save about 100K compared to out-of-state, and instead of paying 500-600 USD a month for dorm, I can support my famiy with that amount.
I interviewed at UCD (on hold), UCSD (no news yet), UCI, and some out-of-state schools.

Wow LHP! That's a quite a burden there for you, I really wish you the best with UCI. I was there a month ago and was impressed with their matchlist and research, along with their current state of expansion. Wish you and your family the best.

LHP I wish u the best of luck with UCI. It sounds like you're a very deserving person.

I have a little question off topic. What kind of ethnic diversity did you guys see in the medical students at UCI?

The only data I remember was from 1997 when one or two URMs (don't remember exactly) enrolled at the med school. I'm wondering if UCI is making any effort to increase ethnic diversity. I'm a URM and UCI was the only California school to not offer me an interview; I interviewed at Stanford and UCSF among the other CA schools, but like I said UCI didn't offer me an interview.

thanx•••••Hey, LHP. You went to UCI as well? I am also a UCI undergrad. I graduated a few months ago. I'm expecting to walk this June. May be I know you? Hehe, it seems like people who are premeds or Bio majors at UCI know each other.

Here are my stats: 9V, 11P, 10B, R.
3.83 Science GPA, 3.89 overall GPA. Research at UCI Medical school for 2 years. Officer of Honors club, Ochem tutoring, an intern for CalPIRG, and volunteered at Huntington Beach Community Clinic for a year. One thing you should realize is that I took the MCAT twice. The first time I did poorly: 6V, 10P, 10B, R. But thank God UCSD only takes the highest set of MCAT scores. Other schools like UC Davis, Stanford, UCSF, and UCLA did not like that I took the MCAT 2x and did poorly on the first time. All UC schools gave me secondaries but the only ones that offered me interviews were UCI and UCSD.

Good luck with UCI.

UCI SOM has great diversity. I know so because I see the medical students all the time when I go to research. There are many URM students. And everyone of them is nice. You said that UCI was the only school that didn't interview you? Weird. But how are things going with other Cali schools. Have you been accepted to any?

Cambrian congrats on UCSD again! you deserve it as well 😀

Cambrian,
How do you know that schools such as Stanford, UCSF, and UCLA did not like the fact that you took the MCAT twice? Just curious b/c I hadn't heard that before.

Jmejia,
If you want to get an idea of how diverse UCI is, take a look at the MSAR - 4 URMs matriculated in 2000 (2 Black, 2 Mex-Amer). I don't necessarily think it's UCI's fault, I think that URM students who get accepted usually opt to go somewhere else b/c they probably get into other UCs that are more diverse or maybe b/c they perceive that there isn't enough support for them b/c of the low numbers. I don't know, but UCIs and UC Davis' numbers are all pretty much the same (according to MSAR). Nonetheless, I liked UCI when I interviewed there.

So if the alternate list is moving, has anyone gotten any info about getting off the post-interview hold pile?

This is slighly off the main topic, but how does UCI notify you of a final decision post-interview? Acct to Gayle, the committee take approx. 4 wks to review your file before reaching a decision, has this been held true? (unlike UCLA!!!!! 😡 😡 😡 )

QB]••••well, it's more of a word-of-mouth thing more than hard facts. But many people I have talked to, including applicants, note how notorious UC Davis is for dropping multiple MCAT applicants. I know a guy who has a 38 on his second MCAT, 3.9 GPA, good EC's and got rejected from UC Davis. He has interviews at UCLA, Yale, UCSD, UCSF but guess what, not UC Davis.

I don't think Davis cares much about the MCAT. Just anecdotally, but I think they value things like ECs, committment to NorCali, non-traditionals, etc...

Hi all;
Thanks a lot for all your support and info. They are of great help to me.
Cambrian: i'm not sure if i know you or not because I hardly hang around at school. I had to go to work almost everyday right after school. Wow, you are amazing!! You interviewed at UCI and UCSD, and got into both. They are my first and second choices, respectively. I took MCAT twice too because of the dreadfully low Verbal score. I got 6 on the first try, and 7 on the second. I guess that's the reason that may shy UC med schools away from accepting me.
